heavy oil it is no longer natural BUY WITH CAUTION As well some granola bars marked pure or natural should also be bought with caution many are made with both sugar and salt Thats what you call health food junk food she says One of the worst offenders however is yogurt Most yogurts on the market are garbage says Ms King Theyre full of sugar and preservatives she sa She advises buying plain yogurt well is usually cheaper than peanut butter offered at most supermarkets Eating healthy foods doesnt have to be expensive at all says Ms King She keeps her food costs to minimum by sprouting such things as alfalfa soya and lentils She says the percentage of people buying natural foods is still relatively small and that could account for the few items that may seem expensive At the CountryFood premiums on my life insurance from my income tax provided assign the policy to bank for security for loan Is this true NWM Dear It is true that under certain circumstances it is possible to deduct portion of the premium for life insurance assigned to lender as collateral security for loan However there are very definite conditions imposed by Revenue Canada which must be met before this deduction is permitted These conditions include Purpose of the Loan The loan must be used in the year to earn income from business or property other than exempt property income and all or part of the loan must be outstading during the year Type of Insurance The policy must be for term insurance only The policy may have conversion privilege but the portion of the premium cost applicable to this feature is not deductible The deductible portion of the premium for participating term policy would also be not of any dividends paid or credited Requirement of the Lender It is not necessary that new policy be obtained at the time of the borrowing The assignment of an existing policy is acceptable providing the arrangement is bona fide re quirment of the lender and not just convenience for the deduction of an otherwise nondeductible premium Premium Payment by the Borrower Although the borrower does not have to be the policyholder the premium must be paid by the borrower Reasonableness of Deduction The amount of the premium deduction must be reasonable in the circumstances To determine the deductible portion the amount of insurance coverage must be compared to the loan balance outstanding less any other security held by the lender at particular point in time If it appeared for example that the lender could recover the full amount of the loan outstanding from other security obtained for that loan then no portion of the premium could reasonably be deducted If the balance of the loan which is secured by the life in surance fluctuates during the year it is necessary to calculate an average loan balance and compare this average balance to the amount of insurance to determine rasonable deductible portion As can be seen it is necessary to exercise considerable care to assure the valid deductibility of life insurance used in this way In light of these new guidelines many existing collateral insurance arrangements will be subject to attack by Revenue Canada
