MAX HAINES 1979 Toronto Sun Syndicate Harry was prince Most of us have secret fantasies Oh to be prince or princess to have servants be respected honored and even loved by loyal subjects to trade places with an honest to goodness member of royal family for year or even month It would be great fun This is the story of young charmer who pulled it off Harry Domela was born in Bauske Russia in 1904 His middleclass parents spoke perfect German and so did Harry When the First World War broke out his father and brothers were inducted into the Russian Army They were never head of again As the front enveloped Bauske Harrys mother simply disappeared Tenyearold Harry was placed in childrens home in Riga where he remained until the war ended Atthe conclusion of the great conflict Harry gravitated to Berlin Here the parentless homeless teenager learned the tricks needed to stay alive Ironically while leading the life of bum Harry managed to steal enough to survive It was only after he got job at the Eden Hotel that he got into trou ble On his first day after joining the ranks of the gainfully employed Harry swiped the hotels silver cutlery Its one thing to steal bit of German sausage from German but cher shop but quite another to walk off with the Edens Silver spoons Harry spent several uncomfortable months in oonveniently detained in prison Upon his release he joined the hoardes of social outcasts wandering the streets of German cities living by their wits Harrys companions included pimps drunks prostitutes and burns One day he met up with burn like himself but quite unusual bum His companion was the down and out son of an old aristocratic German family Harry was amazed that despite his friends adverse station in life he had retain ed his aristocratic air his poise and even his good manners Streetwise Harry recognized good thing His confident friend seemed to have no trouble obtaining handout when he explained his temporary embarrassment to those more fortunate than himself Sometimes the young man would even sweet talk young fraulein into sharing his bed with him for an evening of high class fun and games Harry wat ched his buddy in action and figured when the occasion arose he could be an aristocrat too Stogie salesman Eventually Harry found employment as door to door salesman selling cigars He quickly found out that when he introduced himself as Harry Domela he had the unnerving experience of having door slammed in his face When he in troduced himself as Count Von Whatchamacallit he not only moved few stogies but sometimes the man of the house would press few coins into his hand as well When only the lady of the house was at home other more interesting objects were pressed upon Harry Still and all there must be something better in life than pushing cigars Harry quit his job and moved on making precarious living posing as nobility of some sort or other One day in Erfurt Thuringia he signed hotel register as Baron Korff Harry was unceremoniously assigned room on the fourth floor Pulling the old aristocratic German family bit he requested suite with bath on the first floor It didnt seem to work NO one was impressed Harry would show them thing or two Playing his part to the hilt he made telephone call in front of the hotel staff Harry placed the call to Prince Louis Ferdinand one of the old Kaisers sons at his residence the Palace of Cecilienhof near Potsdam Prince Louis wasnt at home but the call had its effect It so happened that Harry bore striking resemblance to His Imperial Royal Highness Prince Wilhelm of Hohenzollem The manager of the hotel couldnt take his eyes off Harry Could he be lucky enough to have royalty staying at his hotel Gott in Himmell he shouted and dashed off to his office to study group photo of the Royal Family Sure as strudel his guest using the phony name of Baron Korff was in reality Prince Wilhelm Harry Domela never dreamed he would fall into this one Despite his insistence that he was Bron Korff the hotel was instructed to refer to him only as Your Highness Harry wasnt allowed to pay his bill Everyone bowed and scraped in his presence His every wish was catered to It was You Highness this and Your Highness that Our boy never had it so good Still Harry was no fool He knew sooner or later he would be exposed The reluctant imposter moved to Berlin and again checked into hotel as Bron Korff He was greeted with knowning wink Harry couldnt believe it His phony reputation had preceded him Everyone was in on the secret Prince Wilhelm was moving about Germany as Bron Korff Harry lived it up for week or so and then made up his mind If the citizenry insisted on making him prince then let them Harry returned to Erfurt with the express in tention of living like prince Up to this point Harry never actually claimed to be Prince Wilhelm It had all been case of mistaken identity Fame and glory Harry triumphantly returned to the hotel in Erfurt The hotel manager figured that he was the most fortunate man in all Germany to have His Highness as guest not once but twice The mayor of Erfurt paid his respects This time Harry signed the golden book of the town Prince Wilhelm His Highness was in great demand and travelled extensively throught Thuringia opening fairs and bazaars Harry loved having the train stop at every town and delivering little speech to the locals before pulling out of the station to the applause of the multitude Harry became fair to middling after dinner speaker at charity banquets He never failed to sell out the house It was all great fun but Harry knew that sooner or later it must all come to an end To prolong his princely life Harry would confidentially call on the highest ranking army of ficial in any given town He would introduce himself as Prince Wilhelm and request that the high ranking officer Harry Domela regal rogue assist him in suppressmg newspaper accounts ofhis visit to the town The officers always cooperated in suppressing all newspaper stories but Harry keen student of human nature that he was knew that they couldnt do thing about rumors In this way he kept his face out of the rs but still received the royal treatment pape Harry pulled off his ruse for months In January 1927 the bubble burst suspicious hotel manager decided to check It only took telephone call to Potsdam to verify that the real Prince Wilhelm had not been to Thuringia for several months Harry hastily headed for Berlin When he arrived there his explorts were front page news in every page in the country Posing as derelict Harry tried to join the French Foreign Legion This move was his undoing Plainclothes German detectives spotted him They unceremoniously placed him in Colognejail Harry was so popular at his trial that all the witnesses he had duped swore that they gained by his deception rather than suffered from it Harry was found guilty and received prison term of seven months the exact time he already spent in custody He walked out of court free man Harry was not national hero Upon his release he even had the gall to visit the authentic Prince Wilhelms mother Her Imperial Highness the Crown Princess Cecile Harry stayed for tea Later Her Highness stated that he was charming guest and ke her amused by telling stories of how he had posed as her on Harrys book continu to sell for three years In 1930 movie The False Princ was made about his exploits It starred none other than rry Domela As war clouds ap are over Germany Harry left the country and has never een heard of since CPattis
