0R0 STATION Despite the objections of 30 angry township merchants Oro council voted unanimously Wednesday to ask the provincial ministry of transportation and communica tions tMTCt to go ahead with construction of boxbeam me dian on Highway 11 through the township The project which calls for the construction of the median and five flyovers at the iii tersections of Highway It and Concessions 11 and 14 has been in the planning stages for two years Tenders for the work have been called and will be received until Feb 16 Engineers from the ministry have told the township that James Snow minister of transportation and communications ordered that the project receive the ministrys top priority for this area The ministry undertook the project two years ago in response to public outcry over 11 deaths which occurred on Highway 11 in 1973 The project was approved by the 197576 township council last year Merchants whose businesses are located along the highway in the southern part of the township are strongly opposed to installing the median on the highway They say it will seriously hurt them by cutting off access because it will run unbroken from south of Guthrie to the northern limits of the township However they also say they are not opposed to the proposed flyovers delegation of merchants led by Don Fielding appeared before council Monday to pre sent their position NOT NECESSARY Mr Fielding told council that further improvements to make the highway safer are no longer necessary He cited Ullléttltl Provincial Police statistics showing there were no far talities on Highway 11 in em Improvements made to the highway in the last two years are responsible for the ifftfllllt in traffic deaths he said In 1974 and 1975 Highway 11 through ro township was widened and leftturn lanes and acceleration and deceleration lanes added at the intersections of township concessions Reeve Howard Campbell said he is opposed to the median hut he feels council had no choice but to ask the ministry to proceed with the work He said the ministry has told him that if the township wants the fly overs it must also take the ine dian They said it is package deal he said If we get
