whether swine flu immunization programs across the country will be resumed Mass immunization programs were suspended in December when United States health officials disclosed possible link between vac cinations and GuillainBarre syndrome which can cause paralysis or death survey by The Canadian Press shows that health offi cials in most provinces are waiting for advice from the fed eral government before decid ing whether to resume immuni zation Officials in several provinces said resumption is unlikely in any case In Ottawa Health Minister Marc Lalonde is waiting for report from national com mittee on immunizing agents which is meeting in Toronto thisweek However Mr Lalonde said last week that even if swine flu programs are resumed the pub lic might stay away from them because of the paralysis scare In Quebec one health official says he fears that hundreds of chronically ill and elderly per sons may die from diseases re lated to other strains of in fluenza because they have not been immunized against them Dr Aurele Beaulnes director of Laval Universitys Armand Frappier research institute in Montreal said in an interview this week that about 3000 per sons died in Canada last year from flurelated ailments such as pneumonia and cardio vascular and lung diseases He said flu normally becomes more prevalent at the end of February and the beginning of March Across Canada 12 cases of GuillainBarre syndrome have been reported since swine flu programs were suspended But at least four of those involved persons who had not received immunization shots and health officials are not certain whether swine flu shots caused some of the others In Newfoundland about 20 per cent of 42000 eligible el derly and chronicallyill per sons have been immunized against both swine and Victoria flu Dr RG Mathias medical health officer said he does not expect program of mass im munization will be resumed in the province Health Minister Harold Col lins said there would be no mass immunization unless confirmed case of swine flu oc curs In Nova Scotia public health official said swine flu shots are still available to those who ask but nobody has asked since the suspension KEN British foreign office reported today Twenty Simcoe ounty residents are getting shots for rabies Bill Straughan chief of inspection for the county health unit said this morning Four of the 20 are from the Barrie area six from rillia and 10 from CollingWood We do have rabies in Simcoe County and it is on the in crease says Mr Straughan In January 17 positive cases of rabies in animals were iden tified savs Mr Straughan In 1976 36 cases were reported 21 in December Thirty seven cases were reported in 1975 Included in the 20people now being treated is family of five suspected of having the disease after the family dog lied of rabies and another person who handled puppy which died of rabies Two other people are suspected of having the disease after handling dead foxes while one man skinned fox without wearing gloves girl was bitten on the finger by baby raccoon which she was looking after and man was attacked and bitten on the ar ms and legs by some dogs Two people are being vaccinated after being attacked by two cats believed to have rabies Two farmers who handled cows which later died of rabies are also being treated People should never try to break up fight between their pet and wild animal warns Mr Straughan If wild animal is anywhere near dog or human theres good chance it is rabid Rabies apparently runs in Midyear cycles The peak of one cycle happens to be moving now The disease is caused by virus carried in the saliva of rabid animal The virus attacks the central nervous system and finally reaches the brain Symptoms for humans are tingling or burning sensation around the site of the wound followed by fever headache sore throat and loss of appetite This is followed by muscular spasms especially around the mouth and in the throat The spasms spread through the body eventually causing failureof respiration and death Mr Straughan said people can also get rabies by handling rabid animal and touching the salvia The best way to avoid rabies is not to touch an animal suspec ted of having rabies and not to touch any animal believed to have been in contact with another animal suspected of having rabies Wash immediately and contact doctor for further advice says Mr Straughan if you believe you have touched an animal who might have rabies The doctor he said in consultation with the health unit medical officer Wlll decide if rabies vaccinations are needed Mr Straughan said if people believe rabid animal IS in their area they should contact the health of animals branch of lllt department of agriculture 170101 The Simcoe ounty health unit becomes
