10 The Barrie Examiner Friday January 21 1977 Snowmobile club expands By ED HARPER Chay Snowmobiling is becoming more and more family sport in the Huronia area The Huronia Snowmobile Association can take lot of the credit for making the sport so popular for throu have formed in the area their efforts more than 1000 miles of een made and several snowmobile clubs have been yoomed trails The Huronia Snowmobile Association got its start in January 1974 when Carl Cowden snow plan coordinator and Ron Melson director of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs called meeting to bring together interested resort operators government officials and most importantly the snowmobilers to talk about the possibility of organizing the snowmobilers into responsible body and prepare for the pro blems that would surely confront snowmobilers On Feb 1974 the Huronia Snowmobile Association came in to existence with Ron Melson sitting in as president for the first eight crucial months together with group of fine directors who would assist him in this job The forming of committees was one of the first tasks of the newlyap inted board to look after the purchasing of in surance or the association trail forming and mapping and waysandmeans committee to look after the raising of funds to finance the operation of the association Land permission forms were drawn up to assist in acquiring permission from private property owners for the use of right ofway across their property for the purpose of snowmobiling off roads The trail system as of today is made up of approximately 1000 miles of well groomed and maintained trails with more to come The Association has several pieces of grooming equip ment along with several pieces loaned to them each year by the Ministry of Natural Resources and snowmobile distributing firms who have seen the necessity for the use of proper equip ment in the maintenance of trails These trails help to keep the snowmobilers off the roads map of trails is in the process of being drawn up and should be ready for distribution in the near future On Sept 20 1974 the first general meeting of the association was held and Jim Matthews was elected president for the next two years to follow Ron Melson At this time new executive was elected from group of snowmobilers made up of two selected directors from each member club There were approx imately 25 member clubs at that time The two years following the elections were filled with many problems such as incorporating insurance trail forming changing and reforming there various committees to fullfil association requirements On Jan 25 1975 the association was given the honor of hosting one of six snofaris put on by the Ontario Snowmobile Distributing Association and Molsons Brewery The Huronia Snowmobile Association is now made up of ap proximately 45 clubs and 15 associated members which repre sent over 4000 snowmobilers in Simcoe County and is growing steadily The Huronia Snowmobile Association would like to encourage every snowmobiler to join club and become responsible par ticipant of this sport The Association is also grateful to all of the landowners ministry officers municipal governing bodies and law en forcers for their cooperation and assistance in helping to form and run this well needed association Without the unselfish and greatly appreciated permission of private landowners snowmobilers would not be able to travel the many miles of well groomed trails Tomorrow and Sunday there are events that no snowmobiler snould miss These are the dates when the top snowmobile drivers from across Ontario will arrive at Sunset peedway just south of Stroud on Hwy 11 to view for the Simcoe Cup The races will be the third leg in the Ontario Snowmobile
