Facts Indicate Collegiate Band Has Good Record OfCommunityService There was some criticism voiced on the street at the time of the Santa Claus parade in Barrie that the collegiate band was niiss ing This was followed by letter to the press and another to town council by different par ties in the same vein In view of this we feel that it is time to present some facts on the subject and follow with our own opin ion First of all let us make it plain that we had not been talking with the director of the collegiate band for several weeks and he has not asked us to comment What we have learned came from attending the regular meeting of the district collegiate board on Monday at which time the matter was aired Until then we had refrained fr0m opinion waiting to get all angles The Chamber of Commerce sponsored the parade on Saturday Dec on behalf of lo al merchants The director of the band was ap proached and asked if the band would play He gave his opinions as to why he did not like to have his band play on the march and other complications which would arise that day but said he would put it up to the mem bers and let them decide Their executive voted it down If there are those who feel that the band members should have been told to play then they must remember that it was Saturday not school day and these critics should then take it tip with the parents not the band director or the school principal or the board The collegiate commencement was held the night before the parade on Friday Nov 30 followed by the annual school dance The band played at this function That may be no argument that they could not also play on parade but we present it for the record The band is not marching band It is concert hand There is vast difference possibly not understood except by one who knows music andvby that we do not mean one who necessarily plays an instrument Many people appreciate music whorcant play note That is one of the fundamentals of the new emphasis on music in education marching band uses instruments for heavy dutymostly brass clarinets and drums Oth er than that cant be heard outsideBand music on parade must have some volume or the instrumental tones wont blend in the wide open spaces Service bands for instance are selected for that very purpose to lead paradeS and most town bands are too hav ing so many civicfunctions to attend However concert band has large pro iportionofinstruments in the reed class such as flute bassoon oboe French horn tym pani definitely for playing in an auditorium Certainly they cantbe handled with any effect on themarch The Barrie District Col legiate Concert Band has less than half of the 60 or so musicians with instruments that could used effectiveTTorrapaifner All right you say whycouldnt the 25 or so have gone out on the march Dec Be cause it so happens that most of them work peonsaturdays They had already been off the previous 89 urday to participate in music clinic in route arranged by the Depart ment of Education To put it bluntly no pay for second day It was not eStablished employers were prepared to give their music ian help time off without loss of cash This was personal matter for the boys and sev eralgirls in the older grades to decide not some earlier plans could be made and it might be possible tohave smaller group out of the collegiate band take part However It must be remembered also that weather plays an important factor in any thing the collegiate band can do These boys and girls have uniforms which consist of Whitefiannel and light jerseys definitely not outside apparel except in summer We suppose theycould pull on heavy underwear and overcoats and caps That probably does not enter into playing or not playing Those who go on parades are generally well pre pared forthe weather beforehand in their choice of costume fat The Wilson Walls Besidenl gt 117310 Average Not Paid ABC circulation Month andingsepi so 1051 mi in email crimp 3225 months stasis centsrsingle copy $500 simply goes back to the sta tus of the band It is true that they played on parade last May to welcome Barrie Flyersv back from Winnipeg That in itself would iii dicate community spirit but it was done also because each year the Flyers put on bene Ill gazm for the band It was wet that day and the band uniforms and instruments sufl ltlcfl to some extent The fact is that the collegiate band since the school term began in September has been practising for lcllliltc objectives first the concert tour in October to Northern Ontarl0l then the commencement and coming up in month the Kiwanis Music Festival in Tor onto To go on parade at this point would do considerable harm to marchers with brassl instruments and would entail much extral practice to repair for concert work Not only that but the band had no time to work upl any marches or Christmas music for the par ade They just didnt have any in their pres ent repertoire Now we draw your attention to letter on this page which has been received from former band member now at university Itl explains many things about the collegiate band its functions and its limitations It should be read carefully We can well remem ber all the times the band travelled around on Victory Loan functions during the war The organization was much less concertized in those days so far as instrumentation We cant recall at any time the band turning down any civic or patriotic function Fred Granl Reminisce In recent years we must point out that Mr Fisher has often supplied soloists and groups of instrumentalists from the collegiate band for local service clubs and concerts The en tire band will be playing concert benefit for the hospital soon in the new year 1onlinuctl from Monday CHRISTMAS EVE Christmas Eve Its Christmas Eve suppcrs cleared away Seems as if cant believe todays today For month or just about would hardly stir Though crossed their places out on the calendar Now hope when nights begun Santall come stealin in My it makes the shivers run up and down my skin It has been said Barrie people do not hear the band often enough We should point out that in June 1950 the curling club arranged concert in the 4000 seat Barrie Arena which not only featured the collegiate band but also the Leslie Bell Singers The arena was less than onequarter filled But does not the whole subject finally back up to the lack of suitable auditorium Just mink he soon be here in town With seats for one thousand people with his socks of toys If such was available in the collegiates new Forgetting no one for or near of additiOn there would be plenty of opportun 010 aim and bOlS my to hear the mind Lets all hang our stockings right where he can quickly see And another point the writer brings up WI hffngTosrushijlintonight concerns the town band One yearago the Them mars donefSieepisome ratepayers voted against any grant so howl Im going to bed right two can good town organization be expectedllopo tomorrowll quickly come without funds The Town of Barrie gives no the Christmas Day grant for the collegiate band either The collegiate board gives $500 to assist in ex penses Most of the band members purchas ed their own instruments To carry on the gm mystery that seemed to band they raise the balance of the money wmp the house around you new by various functions The director is tea into the hall to meet your father at Cher Hlooks after theband on his own Wills time to have him let in whistle of winter air and swish of time With the cooperatlon 0f board and prm snow and to tell you it was storm Cipa ing in little fine flakes that Council held on Dec in which ill states that number of small property owners from Cundles and Midhurst interviewed these small property owners were some of taxpayers iii the township the council Among the heaviest individual The fact that several issues of your paper had been printed be fore notice of the business of the meeting was published is typ ical of the manner in which the business of the township is band led The Township have advised the taxpayers by ad vertisements printed in your pap er by broadcasts over CKBB and leaflet which was sent to each ratcpaycr of the township regard ing the changes and stating wherc the assessors could be found on certain dates so that interested parties could discuss their assess ment and compare it with other assessments of of Innisfil similar property great number of the ratepay ers of Vespra feel that they have been denied these rights and as the township clerk was quoted in broadcast over CKBB as stating with crook and rattle and clouds of steam and when thetraveller guest stepped off amongt eclarn excitodliplida rhomesters he immedia arm or tail of his overcoat and heard gushing first inthe wellremembered tones of the excited little son or the more who tor gether informed him in the same breath they were telling him host of other interesting things which simply had to be told at once that mother is just over there at the corner waiting for you grip on found him little daughter Then the small procession forced its way through the goodnatured excited struggling crowdrto the edge of the station yard where the family cutter brightlytrimmed buffalo was brought into service and the happy fafnily party would whisk away home to the accompaniment of jingling sleigh bells and the prattle of an animated and voluble bunch of Collegiafel llland should play for local eventsl thas arisen again is quite natural that the citizens of Ilarrie should wonder and ask5 lwhy the Collegiate Bond was not in this Santa Claus parade and think that they should receive an oxplaniition if for no other reason Illflll to clarify the issues in ques non These issues are believe more page The issues are many but does it not boil down to the basic fact that the band is and always has been an institution within the school with its program designed to further the musical education of the students of that swhool This aim is noble one it has been adhered to and defended in the past and it should be jealously guarded now Running close second to this ipoint is the fact that because of the limited musical ability and exper ience of its members the band can not be marching band and good concert band too The band pro gram has always aimed at high standard of concert performance and this is as it should be if the best educational results tained are to be ob ihat the business of the township was being delayed by throngs of irate taxpayers besicging his office proves that the taxpayers were not informed in any manner of the proposed changes which con stitute the greatest changes in tax itlon since the municipality was organized The Reeve of the township is quoted as stating that all taxpay ers were part and parcel of the many courtits Ill Harrie as is possible but in no connection the citizens should roul ize that Barrie has no suitable hall in which concerts of this nature can be pzcsentcd They should al so mom that the bands trips from Barrie are seldom made without purpose more significant than that of enjoying lllr trip and entertain ing lllc citizens of another munici pality The Department of Edn cation tours art splendid example Until one travels and learns usual ly from strangers the widespread and excellent reputation which the band enjoys the importance of these trips may not be fully appreciated Molt important still is the benefit tlcrivctl from these trips by the students themselves In spite of the fact that want this litter to Itfll with basic issues cannot help bill comment on the remark re the disregard of public affairs by youth made by the writer of the letter to the council Would ask that person to check the Concert given by the band in the past year and see how many were given with selfish motive in mind Let that person also check the personal activities of the band members and wagcr he will find them engaged in more public criter priscs than the writer himself My thoughts also go back to that Sul iuday during the war when the band lid live Victory Loan parades in as many Simcoc County towns Disregard of public affairs this Truly the pnblics memory is short or its eyes are blind Let us for minute be plain practical about this matter If the band starts playing for these local parades where is the line drawn for surely they cannot play for them all Who is going to take the responsibility of saying it will play for the Kiwanis and not the Lions or Rotary In conclusion let me say that the citizens of Barrie cannot see the forest for the trees The real ques tion is not whether the Collegiate Band should parade or not but rather the fact purgwand simple that Barrie does not but should possess municipal band for these Turn to page eleven please Style PHONE 4840 if dm
