The Emergency Housing Advisory Group is a community-based group examining the guidelines and criteria for siting and operating a homeless shelter in Oakville. These guidelines will form the criteria for assessment and selection of future shelters in the Region of Halton. During last week's meeting the group also identified the a number of issues of community concern that would require guidelines. They included: · Shelter clients. · Size of shelter; alternative models. · Quality of Life. · Serving the needs of the shelter resi dents and the community. · Security issues, safety concerns. : , L D O C T O R 'S r O F F IC E TM e (Dorval Dr. and North Service Rd. Background materials are now available at Halton Region, 1151 Bronte Road or on the Web site at www.region.halton.on.ca by clicking on the Emergency Housing Advisory Group icon on the home page. The advisory group is scheduled to meet on its own for the last time on Oct. 18, after which it will convene on Oct. 21 to present its findings to the community. The Lighthouse shelter has been in operation since 2000 when Halton Region asked the Salvation Army to open an emergency facility. It was first set up temporarily in the Old Grace House on Old Mill Road, then relocated to the Kerr Street area and has now moved to the former Chamber of Commerce/Tourist Information centre near Kerr Street and the QEW. However, with funding availabje under the federal homelessness initiative, the Salvation Army is looking for a per manent home and at one time had its eye on a parcel of land in the Iroquois Ridge North district. The proposal, however, caused an uproar in the residential com munity and was withdrawn. However, the site is still one of the potential sites being considered by the advisory group. The Lighthouse would provide 20 emergency beds for men and women (without children); 10 beds for youths aged 15 to 18, and 10 transitional beds for adults. Geared to Halton residents, it would also provide counselling, work training, a community health room, com puter room, pastoral services, shower, laundry and meals. The Salvation Army says the Lighthouse would not serve as a halfway house or addiction treatment centre. Halton Region would screen users for mental, emotional and physical health with those screened out being referred elsewhere. Developers want input (Continued from page 1) from a variety of Regional advisory committees and members at large from each of the four municipalities. Individuals interested in tak ing part on the committee will be asked to apply to the Region. In addition to a series of public meetings, open houses and committee workshops on the issue, the staff directions report is available for public viewing and comment on the Region's Web site, www.region.halton.on.ca. While still generally sup portive of the directions report, concerns were raised by a pair of speakers repre senting landowners in devel opment areas. "My client has significant (property) holdings in Halton and we want to have meaning ful input into this process," said Scott Snider, representing Paletta International. "We're a little concerned about the progress made to date without input from the public." Upon conclusion of the public consultation process in November, official plan amendments will be prepared for regional council considera tion. If adopted, the amend ments would be included in the official plan and used dur ing the consideration of devel opments.
