Official plan review seeks public input By Richard Vivian SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Emergency shelter meeting tomorrow night Halton Region is opening up the floor for public discussion, Thursday night, on its search for a site for an emergency housing shelter in Oakville. But in order to keep the public meet ing focused, the region has set up goals and procedures for the discussion regarding the Salvation Army's Lighthouse shelter. At the third m eeting o f the Emergency Housing Advisory Group on Friday, the group's 15 members out lined the following: · The evening is designed to solicit ideas and suggestions from the commu nity. · The focus of the evening's discus sion is on communications suggestions, site location criteria and operational guidelines. · The scope of discussion on criteria (see 'Advisory' page A4) Following months of review, proposed revisions to Halton Region's Official Plan are heading out for public comment. Halton's Planning and Public Works Committee received a directions report on the official plan from staff last Wednesday, sending the document forward to gather public opinion. "The directions are purposely broad, so as not to exclude possible other directions received from the public," added Patrick Murphy, Halton's Commissioner of Planning and Public Works. Oakvillegreen -- an environmental group that has routine ly said the official plan doesn't go far enough to protect the environment -- spoke favourably of the directions report. "This is a real step forward. This gives us something to work with," said group representative Michael Lansdown. "This is a good start. We'll provide the rest of our comments during the public consultation process." Public consultation is scheduled to begin later this month, following the council selection of an official plan review steering committee. The committee will include members (See `Developers' page A4) Meeting sheds light on hate crimes "Partners Against Hate," a new com munity initiative promoting the impor tance reporting hate crime to police, continues tonight (Wednesday) with a free community meeting to discuss issues in public. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Halton Regional Centre, 1151 Bronte Rd., and topics will include how to recognize hate, why it is important to call police, how police deal with hate crime, how courts deal with hate, the impact of hate on the commu nity and proactive initiatives in the com munity. Special guest speaker is Dr. Karen Mock, executive director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation. Other speakers include halton Regional Police C hief Ean Algar, Deputy C hief Gary Crowell, Laila Eiriksson, of the Multicultural Council, and Jim Coppolino, o f the Halton Crown Attorney's Office. The Halton Multicultural Council and Halton Regional Police recently launched phase one of the program by distributing an information pamphlet that explains what a hate-motivated crime is, what to do if you are a victim of hate and the importance to contacting police.
