children zilerE of complete concentra Jtion diligence and striving to wards excellence And through the whole program most of all was the atmosphere of happi ness ree schools have taken on pilot proect oi string in ction Codrlngton Street School Johnson Street School and Steele Street School each have separate classes and then these were combined to produce an ambitious program of excerpts from some of the finest classics written Joining wfu the three schools for last nights concert was the recorder kroup from Grove Street School flue recorders gave sparkle and added dimension to the stringed program and is forerunner of possible woodwind classes that may be added to the elemen tary schools in town The program was in four sec tions The opening part included three selections played by the complete orchestra Th were followed by solos duos and tries by various young chil dren Choral groups from the schools joined the orchestra in the third part They were par ticularly elfective in Bachs chorale Good News from Hea ven The final section opened with carols which were probably the loveliest part of the program The intonation and gener ai effect was good and made real impression on the audience Then with gun st players Wendy Colwill buss Viol quartet played Bachs Jesu instructors Cyril Leeper and Mrs Mary Porcheron violins George Laidlaw clarinet and Joy of Mans Desiring The most etching piece on the program was the final one the Ode To Joy from the last movement of Beethovens Ninth Symphony The full orchestra was joined by all the choral groups and finally the audience to giVe thrilling performance that pleased these beginners on strings as much as their par eats Special mcnllon must be given to Mark Manchester who played guitar and Kim Godfrey who played bells to give variety of sound to the program The String Program has been in existence in the schools only since January To even attempt such program seems an im possibility For it to come off so well with only few
