In the early days they were sponsored by Agricultural Societies the first farm groups to be established and history records that in 1946 when the provincial exhibition was hcld in the City of Toronto 11 special feature of the event was plow ing match It took place on alarm on Yongc Street in the vicinity of St Clair Avenue These matches not only gave farmers an opportunity to dis play their skill in the handling of walking plow but Irashow the fine teams of horses many 111 which were imported or were from imported stock The holding of competitions of this type in conjunction with an exhibition or fair was never very ractical as it was difficult to ind suitable land cunvenicntly la catcd in relation to the fair hrounds therefore those cspcc ially interested decided to stage uch contests apart from the lair and the result was the setting up of Plowing Associations on Township or county basis This plan was quite general by he turn of the CDnitIty However thy itill interest in matches had fallen off so much that meeting of officers representing the most Vaclivematchcs was held in Tor Qiuto for the ptirplfiernf assess ing the status of these events 91nd what should be the future program The result of thisniceiiug was the formation of the Ontario Ptowmens Association Two years later they held their first jrrnvincial match on farm near thc city which is now the site of Sunuybrook Hospital There were 31 competitors with horse drawu plows but one brave soul entered the competition with plow drawn by tractor It prov ed to be real curiosiiy The match was so successful in the eyes of the Association ithat dccision was immediately made for the provincial match to be an annual event It was repeated on the same farm the ncxt year but thereafter was rotated throughout those areas jn Ontario when interest in piowing matches was kccnest The plan of hold be match 4in the laitseaso inrarnew iocatiou cach yeai has never can changed in 53 years of the mssnciaiiohs existence The jnatch howcve was discontinued during the period of the last lwar but was revived again in 1546 the site being Port Albert in uron County In 1926 it was given the title International with their plowing match such as demonstrations of farm drainage brush stump and fence removal corn and says bcan harvesting the use or new cr types of implements includ ing pious In addition very few branch matches are held without mashinciy displays of some kin EXHIBITOES From the time the tractor was introduced during the first world war as labor saving device farm macllinuy eompani have taken keen interest in the In terualional Up until recent years they have cooperated by furnishing anti servicing trac tors and where possible they had their block men and dealers look up plows for competitors Coupled with ths was their interest in arranging exhibits at titeplowing match of other lines of equipment and the demonstralt ting of same Thisbrought about the setting up by the Plowmens Association of properly organ ized exhibit area which is now commonly known as Tent od City it was not long until firms with other lines of lab devicfi camerin as bltorss Today those using the match in addition to the above include banks oil companies producers of cars and trucks dairy equip mcnt farm buildings household and garden supplies also live stock breeders chick hatcheries seed and tertilizer companies real estate agencies radio TV stations and newspapers In addition government agen cies and departments have join ed the ranks and each year oc cupy large portion of the hibit area It should be acknowledged that churches junior farmers womens institutes and service clubs also many individuals in the food servicing business have made practice of participat ing The net revenue from sub venture is usually quite satisfac toiy Down through the years great many church and com munity centrerbuiiding debts have been liquidated at least iupart throughvmoucy made at the International Plowing Match TENTED CITY Despite the fuctthe QIA has never out campaign on to sell space or has urged anyone to buy the number of exhibitors and caterers has grown steadily over the year At the 1965 moteh over miles or tmntage was purchased Exhibitors and catcrcrs are supplied with hydro telephone garbage picktip water under pressure toilet facilities identi fication badges and the nceer sary passes and what is more important they are exposed to large crowds of farm people av eraging from 37000 to 10000 day Anyone tamiliar with Tented City will note that it is laid out in four street which permits both sides of each street tobe occupied One of these streets is used entirely by manufacuirors of heavy machinery The large ma chinery normally occupy approx imatuiy 20 per cent of the Tent ed City exhibit area but repre sent only per cent of the total etohibitors The International Plot Of Ontario For Century Match andtnrrn ltiiichinery Demonstration enjoys great measure of support and coop eration from various agencies and government departments Ontario ilydro has always sup plied power for exhibitors in Tented City Ontario Provincial Police look after the traffic The Ontario Fire Marshals Office secs toit that Tented my is kept free of hazards and provide protection The Department of Highways carry supply of signs and erect them each yebr for the benefit of those driving to the match Bell Telephone Company sup plies local and long distance ser vice All this is given freely and without cost to the Association and came about simply for the asking it is therefore assumed those responsible feel that par ticipating in such large event is good public rdations The same can be said of radio television and press These agen ciu must be convinced they can benefit or they would not be More Powerful Tractors In Early In the early 1950s larger farms came into being and farm help became scarce For this reason it was necessary to make change to more power fut tractors pulling larger plows usually of the thEEjiUlTOW type Sales at this Lime changed to approximately 50 per cent to inch frames and 50 per cent 12inch frames Again in the late 50s with still larger farms it was neces sary to have tractors pulling four and iiveturrowplows At this time problems began to arise The industry had how gone so or away fromthe or iginal lightweight tractor that now with the heavy units the Iarmers encountered twisting and damage occurring to the plow when obstructiors such as stones were encountered in the field To counteract this sit uatioil elaborate shear spring trip moldboard assent blies were introduced with tar cctlent results At this same time new crop was becoming my popular itamely porn high percentage of plow Built 19505 sales nbw incorporated safety beams and big swing to wards 12 inch and it iioii frames so that corn stover could be eovered better These plows now being introduced had the highnvear areas at the mold board designed as replacement part Most of these plows were now equippedwith notched roll ing euultcrs to assut in cutting the trash now aimed for in farm ing The IlltiSt recent change to take place is the switchto trac tors with from 7st 100 horse power or more This kind of power depending on the type of soil being farmed handles from St ti furrow plow nacrnur rennet In the years 1954 in 1947 the totaIAcatch or halibut averaged 5760000 cent of which was taken by from Ontario Department of Agriculture there Their representatives are always on the job and anxious to be or service ATTENDANCE Weather plays big part in the success or failure of any outdoor event Hcavy losses have been experienced over the years because of unfavorable weather conditions Hurricane Hazel in 1954 when tiic match was in pro Ems at Brestaw in Waterloo County has not been forgotten Despite this handicap and con trary to stalcrnean being made the attendance over the years has ranged all the way from 50000 to 150000 COMMITTEE
