Henry Benzoni Oakville Little League junior baseball team hosting provincial championships this week The Ontario provincial junior A Little League championships are under way in Oakville. A ll games are at the Glen Abbey ball diamonds, and action kicked off yesterday with the opening cere monies at 6 p.m. and a full slate of games. Oakville's opening game didn't start until 8 p.m. and went beyond our Wednesday edition press deadlines. Check Friday edition for recap. The winner of last night's game was slated to play today (Wednesday) at 3:30 p.m. while the loser played in the 7 p.m. game. The tournament is a double knock out format. The tourney schedule had three games scheduled on both Wednesday and Thursday (at noon, 3:30 and 7 p.m.) Following that, with the dust start ing to settle, there is only one game each day thereafter, starting at 4 p.m., on Friday, Saturday. Sunday and. if needed. Monday. The championship could be wrapped up with the Sunday game, providing the winner has an undefeat ed record. If both teams boast identical 1 -1 records after Sunday's game. then, it w ill come down to a final game on the Monday. Also this morning (Wednesday), is one of the off-field highlights -- the players breakfast at Hilton Garden Inn, host hotel for all of the teams. The highlight of the breakfast is slated to be the guest speaker Brian Warren, former C F L all-siar lineman with Edmonton Eskimos (Grey Cup '87) and the Toronto Argonauts (Grey Cup '91). Apart from his duties as executive director of Kids Fest Canada. Warren is an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The winner of this week's provin cial championship advances to the national championships in LaPlaine, Quebec, from July 31 to Aug 7. The Oakville line-up is pictured above. Hack on district team A central west region midget girls basketball team was undefeated in five games to win the championship at the Nike Elite Midget Development Camp held at York University, Ju ly 9-13. The central west team included O akville's Christina Hack who played a key role in the championship run. Her highlight probably came from the semifinal game where she tied the game with a buzzer beater at the end of the first overtime. Her team then prevailed in double overtime, defeating the Ottawa region team 69-63. Oakville still had enough gas left in the tank to win the championship game 59-55 over the defending champion St. C lair team. Central West was coached by Sean Fullan and open to athletes from Brampton. Burlington. Halton H ills. Mississauga and Oakville. "W e w ill have every O akville rep team working on the Mitron program this coming season to assure consistent programming for all player levels, in spite of unavoidable coaching turnover." he stated. "A s well, for the coming season we w ill be moving the dryland training program to River Oaks B this fall, from the Oakville Arena. " Fortunately Kim Cucoch (town rep V.P.) jumped at the offer from the Town Parks and Rec to make use of a spacious area in the upper level (N W corner) of the rink." Captain Wayne Sliwinski also had a great game with three tackles -- 2.5 tackles for losses. `The defence was the best overall performance we have had this year." The same can't be said for offence which, overall, " did not play to their potential, with only 133 total offence, which is to say that Mississauga had a good defence." Penalties were also a problem w ith 10 penalties for 110 yards "which hurt us offensively." The leading light, said coach McNerney. was run ning back Derwin Phillips who had 15 carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns.
