Cpl. Cirillo's death was senseless, tragic, but not in vain continued from p.20 of Canada 100th Anniversary Pavilion in Bayfront Park in Hamilton. The entire Argyll regiment and Cirillo's family started the procession there at the memorial that honours the soldiers who died during the First and Second World Wars. "To see the number of people who lined the streets, four and five deep, to pay their respect to this young man and uphold his family and encourage them -- it was just amazing," said Fead. "I think, in many ways, it was our regiment and our country at its best." Fead continues to keep in touch with Cirillo's family and his mother Kathy, whom he describes as an emotional rock. "She's been a pillar of strength through it and in some ways, as much as we've tried to uplift her in the midst of the whole tragedy, she's also done it for us, as the regiment, too. She's an incredible lady," he said. "And she's so incredibly grateful for the support she's received from the Canadian Armed Forces and the whole country." The 50-year-old Oakville resident attributes his training as a solider to being able to deal with the, at times, overwhelming emotion that comes with his job as a military chaplain. The strong emotions affect him like everyone else, Fead admits. "But I think as soldiers, part of our training, is that we have a task and we work together to get it done. And even though there are times when it's difficult and emotional for all of us -- the military is a very close-knit family and we encourage, support and care for one another," he said. Fead notes it's the support he receives from his wife, Veronica, his parish, bishop and military family that keep him going and able to bring comfort to others in times of grief. During Cirillo's funeral, Fead told the crowds, as tragic and senseless as the reservist's death was, it wasn't in vain. It had, in fact, brought the Canadian Armed Forces family, and the country at large, even closer together and "more determined to do their duty to the end." "I think it's done incredible things to help unify the country and help us to be more determined to make the world in which we live a better place -- so that we don't have to keep sending our men and women off to war," Fead added. "It'd be nice if that day would come." 21 | Friday, November 21, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Natural Approaches to Helping Digestive Disorders Free Informational Health Session Especially important for people suffering from Crohn's, Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Acid Reflux, etc. Do you have the CorreCt insuranCe Coverage?
