It needs to fill the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts with people this Friday. July 18 between 1 - 4 p. m for an upcom ing project - a video opera. Volunteer cast members will act the parts o f delegates at an international AIDS conference, listening to the singing o f an aria. The project, called Fig Trees, will be displayed in Oakville G alleries in Gairloch Gardens and in Centennial Square from November to January. It will be directed by John G reyson. acclaimed in both the art world and the m ainstream Canadian film circle. His film Lilies earned four Juno awards in 1996. Essentially, Fig Trees is a m odem remake o f w riter Gertrude Stein's Four Saints in Three Acts, except with an enor mous twist. Revolving around Saint Teresa and Saint Ignatius, Four Saints in Three Acts, according to Stein, is about the Spanish landscape and the lives of saints. The opera was put to music by Virgil Thomson. First staged in H artford, Connecticut, in 1934, it did rem arkably well and is often thought to be the best work both Stein and Thomson ever did. Stein contrasted saints with activists and reportedly comment ed that to be a "good saint" one has to do nothing, while activists continuously try to do something. Greyson probably knew o f that comment beforehand, as the twist in the opera is the introduc tion of Zackie Achmat, a South African AIDS activist, filmmaker and friend o f Greyson's. The director, in collaboration with m usician and com poser David Wall, has taken a lot o f lib erties with the opera, and explained that Gertrude Stein, who died in 1946, is alive in his version, writing about Achmat and martyrdom. Achmat is one of nearly 5 mil lion HIV-positive South Africans. He heads the Treatment Action Group and has stopped taking the medication he is fortunate to be able to afford until it is affordable to all. He said it could only be achievable if U.S. pharmaceutical companies loosened their patent policies and allowed widespread Jo h n G reyson sale of generic versions of their drugs. The final product o f Fig Trees will be a set o f televisions throughout the gallery spaces, each in different environments, that will take viewers, scene by scene, through the opera and the galleries. Viewers will also be given the libretto so they can more easily follow along. It was the structure o f the O akville G alleries that made Greyson want to do it there. "O f all the contem porary art gal leries," Greyson said, "it was the only place where I could picture going from room to room." Curator of contemporary art Mamie Fleming expects that Fig Trees will take the O akville Galleries to an entirely new level as a contemporary art institution. "Once we get this under our belts, w e'll be able to do any thing," she said. "This is a perfect match for our gallery." It isn't just the enormity o f the video opera either. A book and CD set, along with G reyson's libretto notes and an essay by Bongani N dodana, a South African composer and musical director of Ensemble N oir who now lives in Toronto, will be available. "We really w ant a mobile audience completely consumed," Fleming said. "We want an audi ence of participants." One of the best ways to partic ipate will be to show up at the O akville Centre for the Performing Arts, 130 Navy St., on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. and become a part o f Greyson and Wall's video opera, and a part of art history. All volunteer actors will become part of the Friends o f the Avant-Garde, Oakville Chapter, and will have the privilege o f fol lowing the creative process o f Fig Trees.
