www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 20, 2014 | 52 High school football playoff games postponed to next week This week's freezing temperatures and snow wreaked havoc with the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association's post-season football schedule. High school sports Regional Tier 2 finals originally scheduled for yesterday (Wednesday) were postponed to next week, as were today's (Thursday's) Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference senior semifinal contests. The Loyola Hawks will now meet Burlington's Frank Hayden Huskies in the junior Tier 2 final Tuesday at Nelson High School in Burlington, beginning at 9:45 a.m. That game will be followed up by an all-Oakville senior Tier 2 final at noon between the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers and St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders. The Halton senior Tier 1 champion Holy Trinity Titans will be home to Hamilton's Cardinal Newman Monday at 1 p.m. in one GHAC semi, while Burlington's Assumption Crusaders will travel to Hamilton for a clash with St. Thomas More. The Halton Tier 3 finals were also rescheduled to Monday, but none of them involve Oakville squads. Blakelock repeats as field hockey champs The T.A. Blakelock Tigers won their second straight Halton senior girls' field hockey Tier 2 championship last Wednesday at Bronte Athletic Field, defeating the White Oaks Wildcats 3-1 in the final. Blakelock went 9-0-1 during the regular season and followed that up with a 2-1 win over Holy Trinity in the quarter-finals and a 5-0 blanking of Georgetown in the semis. The Wildcats were 6-1-3 before defeating Iroquois Ridge 2-0 in the quarters and upsetting the Abbey Park Eagles 2-0 in the semis. Abbey Park nearly shocked the undefeated Craig Kielburger Spartans in the junior Tier 2 final, losing 1-0 in penalty flicks Wednesday at Bronte. Kielburger was 8-0 during the season, outscoring its opponents 27-0. King's sends team to OFSAA basketball The King's Christian Collegiate Cavaliers are seeded fifth in the OFSAA girls' basketball A tournament that began today in Cornwall. The Cavs were slated to play their first game this afternoon against Englehart. Volleyball teams denied trips to provincials Two local volleyball teams were denied trips to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association championships with home losses last Thursday to Hamilton schools. The Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils dropped a 3-1 decision to Cardinal Newman in the GHAC AAAA final, and the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders fell 3-2 to Cathedral in the AAA title game. Winter season starts Tuesday The HSSAA's winter seasons get underway Tuesday with action scheduled in boys' basketball and boys' and girls' hockey. Girls' volleyball begins the following day. Defenceman Tanner Shaw came up big in the two games for Oakville, netting a natural hat trick in a 5-0 win over Newmarket Friday and then notching the winner in a 4-3 triumph over the Wellington Dukes the following evening. Shaw added an assist in each game to bump his season point total to 23, tying him with teammate Greg Campbell for the third-most by defencemen in the league. Christian Rajic and Matt Lippa scored Oakville's other goals Friday and Brendan McGlynn stopped 25 shots to record the shutout. Oakville outshot the Hurricanes 48-25 on the evening. Tyler Rollo, Ross Sloan and Josh Kosack tallied Saturday versus Wellington, when McGlynn made 39 saves for his second win in as many nights. The Blades played last weekend without forward Ryan Garvey, goaltender Daniel Manella and defenceman Campbell, who were participating in the Central Canada Cup Challenge in Etobicoke. Oakville (14-9-1-1) will be home to the Hamilton Red Wings tomorrow (Friday) at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Hornets still undefeated through 19 games Nikki Cece recorded her third straight shutout, Loren Gabel had a natural hat trick and the Oakville Hornets defeated Kingston 5-0 Sunday to improve to 17-0-2 on the Provincial Women's Hockey League season. Cece turned aside 25 shots -- 15 in the third period -- for her league-leading fourth shutout of the year. She and teammate Daniela Paniccia, who made 15 saves Friday in the Hornets' 8-1 win over the Leaside Wildcats, have combined to allow just two goals in the Hornets' past five contests, posting a .979 save percentage during that span. Jazz Kennedy and Amy Curlew scored first-period goals for the Hornets before Gabel provided the next three Oakville markers. Christina Putigna and Mackenzie Stamper both contributed two assists. In Friday's game, Emma Maltais moved ahead of teammate Madison Field for the PWHL scoring lead with a three-goal, two-assist effort. Field had four points of her own (two goals, two assists) and Jaime Bourbonnais, Lauren Patterson and Cassidy MacPherson also found the net for the Hornets. Earlier Friday, Field and Bourbonnais were among the 28 players invited to Hockey Canada's under-18 selection camp, as were Oakville natives Lindsay Agnew and Kristin O'Neill (Stoney Creek Sabres). The camp will take place Dec. 10-14 in Hamilton, when a 23-player roster will be finalized for the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship scheduled for Jan. 5-12 in Buffalo, N.Y. Loyola coach says `we're not changing anything' for OFSAA continued from p.51 necticut standout and Hamilton native) Kia Nurse so we've tried to build on that. To come in here and beat them in the GHAC championship game is something special." So now it's on to uncharted territory. But Pauletto says he tells his troops advancing to OFSAA is like riding a wave. "It's up and down, it comes and goes and you play for 32 minutes. Just because you're doing well early on in the game, it doesn't mean it's going to come easy the rest of the way, so you tell them to focus and you tell them there's lots of time.... It's okay to make a mistake, it's okay to throw the ball away. There's going to be lots of time to make up for it." And even though Pauletto has vets such as Pocrnic and Kirkpatrick to lean on from a leadership perspective, his message heading into the tournament was consistent. "I just tell the girls, we're not changing anything. We're not going to switch up our defence, we're going to do what we always do, we're going to do what we practised to do. I'm confident you can go out there and play against anybody. I'll take those girls up against anybody in the province right now. They're playing that well." If victorious in their first game, the Hawks would face either Grand River or Earl Haig (whichever team lost its first-round contest) this evening. The OFSAA medal games are scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
