Amnesty sees more than 200 guns, knives and ammunition surrendered continued from p.15 "Without this program, these people would probably still be holding onto them," Murray said. "We want to encourage the community to continue this effort." Sitting off to the side from the tables of mostly long-guns was a Webley revolver and a Browning 9mm FN pistol, each weapon with a storied past and each surrendered to police by the widows of the guns' original owners. As told to Halton police, the revolver belonged to Walter Archer, who served with the British Army's Nottingham Foresters Cavalry regiment during the First World War. A marking on the pistol's trigger guard shows where shrapnel from an exploding bomb struck Walter's hand during an attack in No Man's Land. "He survived the attack, returned home and then he served as an RCMP officer and carried the same weapon," Murray explained. The 9mm Browning pistol was issued to Ralph Probert during the Second World War. He was a doctor with the Canadian Army www.edwardjones.com 21 | Thursday, November 20, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Medical Corps, took part in the D-Day landings and went on to serve in France, Holland and Germany. Gun still operational "What's also significant about this weapon is that it's sat in the closet of his residence since 1946," Murray said. "The gun is still operational, but it was turned into us." Halton police hope their amnesty takes away some the risk of a firearm being stolen in a break-in when gun-related enforcement process can become costly. "The resources that are involved in a gun investigation are tremendous," Murray explained. "Any search warrant involving a gun is a high risk situation and requires significant deployment of resources, both from the drug gun and gang unit and/or the tactical rescue unit." In the hands of the police now, the gun's serial numbers are run through a database and shell casings are sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences (CFS) in Toronto for ballistics testing.
