Hidf Stay on sidewalks when trick-or-treating, and remember to carry a flashlight. Cross the street only at corners, and always look both ways before crossing. Don't trick-or-treat alone, and plan your route ahead of time with an adult. If you're riding a bike, skateboard or scooter, place reflective tape on it. Wear light-coloured or reflective clothing, so you'll be visible in the dark. Stay away from open flames or candles, like those in luminaries and jack-o-lanterns. Avoid approaching homes that aren't well-lit. Never enter a stranger's house for candy. Be careful around animals who may be fright ened by your unfamiliar costume. Older children should be given a curfew and stick to a pre-planned route. When buying a costume for your child, look for something made of flame-retardant material and use non-toxic face paints instead of masks. Make sure your trick-or-treaters know how to reach you at all times. Inspect all candy for tampering or torn wrap pers before allowing your children to eat it. Remove any tripping hazards from the front of your home. Consider using a battery-powered jack-olantern, and keep candle-lit pumpkins safely away from trick-or-treaters.
