Prevost says watercolours are " spon taneous" and that her paintings have changed. "They used to be more literal, now they're becoming more universal with more room for interpretation." Prevost said. The artist said the strength of her paintings are the colours because that's what she reacts to when looking at art work. Prevost said she completes three or four group shows a year as well as one or two solo shows. The watercolourist has also done shows at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, displayed her work in gal leries such as Kensington Place Gallery in Toronto and in numerous exhibitions in Quebec, Nevada. California and France. Prevost. a Quebec City native, said she has been an artist all of her life. "1 was bom like that, it was like breathing and walking. It made me whole." She said she was fortunate her talent was recognized at an early age. In Grades 1-3, Prevost had the same teacher. She said that whenever she became frustrated in class her teacher would take her aside and let her design a magazine cover or do something artis tic. Prevost believes creating art is a good outlet. As a child, when she and her sister would tire of each other. Prevost would begin painting. She adds her sister is a big fan of her work and always encouraged her to show her work. Prevost believes artists should Haunt their work, believing artists stay in their studios too much. " If people don't see it, it doesn't exist." she explained. Prevost said she likes to show her work in a variety of venues. " If the work is strong enough, it w ill stand on its own whether it's in a cheap caf£ or an expensive gallery." In her early years. Prevost participat ed in art shows at elementarv school. Julie Fairrie · Special to the Oakville Beaver Watercolourist Dominique Prevost takes her life-long love affair with art to the 5th Annual A rt and Artisans by the Lake Show and Sale set for May 4. The strength of her work, says Prevost. is all in the colours used. designed high school theatre posters and theatre props. Until 1983, when Prevost moved to Toronto and began her career as a "pro fessional" artist, the watercolourist did renovation and construction to " get a roof over her head". The mother of two young children now says. "Everyone should be fortu nate enough to do w hat they love." Concerning where her ideas origi nate. Prevost says, "some people are at a loss for ideas. I feel like a sponge, not a filter." While in the Mexican fishing village of Yelapa, the artist said she changed her style because of the different atmos phere and began using browns instead of using Caribbean colours in her paint ings. While showing her art. Prevost said people react to some pieces by saying it reminds them of places they've trav elled, with further inquiry, she often dis covers she has also been to the places her customers have visited. She believes her work has a "time less" feeling to it and that, if someone buys her work once, they usually come back for more. In addition to watercolour painting. Prevost works with ceramics and acrylics. The paintings range in price from S45- $2,000. The art show will be displaying the work of 75 other artists from all over Ontario. Art forms include paintings, pottery, wood and metal art, sculpture and glass works. A bake sale, a raffle and a tearoom will be held all day as well. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This extravaganza is organized by the May Court Club of Oakville and all proceeds will be donated to Halton Women's Place and Breast Cancer One card.
