A 4 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 17, 2002 Region wants advisory group to tackle shoreline algae stink By Richard Vivian SPECIAL TO T H E REAVER Lake Ontario algae is a growing con cern in Oakville and Burlington, but Halton Region hopes a new advisory group will help curb the trend. Halton's planning and public works committee endorsed the establishment of a Lake Ontario Shoreline Algae Action Com m ittee (AAC) at its Wednesday meeting. "It (algae odour) gets more than rank, it gets to the point where people are having breathing problems," said Oakville Councillor Kevin Flynn, who sat in on the meeting. "The Region has a major investment with this issue. It has the harbour, the marina, all the integrated waterfront planning w e've been doing for the past 15 or 20 years is all at risk here." The AAC - which has yet to approve a formal terms o f reference - will assist regional council in identifying and assessing the environmental conditions of the great lake in O akville and Burlington. Over the past several years, the shoreline has seen a dramatic increase in algae - leading to numerous and pro longed odour com plaints. Bronte Village has been the worst hit. "It (algae odour) has worsened over the past three years, to the point where it's impairing the enjoyment we have of our properties," said David Dorion of the Bronte Algae Group - a group of concerned area residents. "It is caused by several factors, some of which are beyond our control. But we think the most important factors are the quality, quantity and location of sewage treatment effluent." Progress is being made through upgrades to Halton's water purification plants, Mr. Dorion pointed out, but more needs to be done. In its motion o f endorsement, the comm ittee also stated it will seek sup port from neighbouring m unicipali ties, the Province o f Ontario and the federal government for algae initia tives. "It is important to look at this from a wider perspective and all other issues that would work on the pollution prob lem in the long term ," said Liz Behrens, executive director o f the Bronte Village Business Improvement Area. No new funding will be allocated for the initial set-up of the AAC, but sup ports will be provided through existing budgets: Regional council has yet to approve the new advisory committee, but is expected to speak to the matter today.
