The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 17, 2002 - C7 Loyola wins Burlington Cup Loyola are the unofficial junior Halton hockey champs after winning the Burlington Cup tournament last week. The annual season ending high school tournament is designed to introduce the younger students, in Grades 9 and 10, to high school hockey. "A lot of the coaches also coach the senior team so it gives you a chance to scout the talent in the school, and also for the kids to get a feel for your coaching style," said Loyola coach Keith Boyd. As it is in unofficial, introductory tournament for high school students, rep players are allowed to suit up which makes for an extremely high calibre tournament. The regular Halton high school league, by contrast, does not allow rep players to suit up. "Everyone on the (Loyola) team was double or triple-A, minor or major bantam," said coach Boyd. "It's the best in the schools and every school has got their best kids out. It doesn't have the title of Halton championship but (near ly) every school had a team in it." Oakville showed its strength in hockey as Thursday's Burlington Cup championship was an all-Oakville affair won by Loyola 6-5 over Blakelock in overtime. With the teams playing three-on-three, Jeff Nabeta made him self an instant hero with the overtime marker. It was made possible with Nick Davis sending the game into overtime with a goal with just three seconds remaining and the goalie pulled. "It was back and forth," said coach Boyd. "We went up a cou ple, they stormed back and went up." It was sweet revenge for Loyola who had lost their only game of the tournament, 2-1 to Blakelock, as they finished out the pre liminary round with a 3-1 record. Loyola then won its quarterfinal game 5-2 over Assumption and its semifinal game 6-2 over Q.E. Park. Winning the tournament was definitely their goal going into the tournament, said coach Boyd.
