W hat is The Salvation Army T he Salvation Army is a dream o f a better world. It is a battle against hunger, poverty and despair, a battle fought with faith and compassion. This international religious and charitable movement was started in the slums o f London in 1865, by William Booth, a former M ethodist minister who reached out to the poorest o f the poor. I The homeless Each night in Canada, more than 100,000 people sleep anywhere that m ight provide some shelter from the elements. T he Salvation Army's street workers reach out to homeless in many urban centres. Volunteers patrol dark streets and alleys, seeking out the lost and the hurting. The Army operates hostels and emergency shelters that provide thousands with a safe place to call home, even if it's just for one night.
