Members proudly attended the celebration. | submitted photo Nineteen local community charitable organizations recently received a boost, thanks to a $100,000 donation by the May Court Club of Oakville. The volunteer women's organization offers its services to and raises funds for the community, with the goal of being role models for volunteerism and community service. "We have been fortunate to be able to give back to our community every year," said Rosa Capparelli, May Court Club of Oakville director of public relations. "Last year, we gave back $108,000 in charitable donations and almost $60, 000 in scholarship awards, for a total of $175,000 in charitable and scholarship awards. This year, we expected to give back just as much." A host of fundraisers The donation was collected from the May Court's Nearly New Shop, scholarship dinners and annual fundraisers. The funding presentation was made at the River Oaks Community Church on May 7 to the following local charities: A host of funded groups · Acclaim Health -- helps provide more than 18,500 residents in Halton with community-based health care solutions · Art House Program for Children and Youth -- offers cost-free arts programs to children aged seven to 12 · Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton -- local chapter of the national child and youth mentoring charity · Canadian Diabetes Association -- helps those with diabetes fight against the disease while working to fund and find a cure · Carey House -- a supportive housing project that provides affordable and accessible homes Purina Walk for Dog Guides is this Sunday in Oakville Oakville residents and their fourlegged pals are gearing up for the Purina Walk for Dog Guides Sunday (May 25). The five-kilometre walk takes place at 10 a.m. at the Lions Foundation of Canada Oakville office, 152 Wilson St. There is no registration fee and all funds support providing free dog guides to those in need. "From every-day support to finding help when it's needed most, dog guides are a central part in helping many Canadians with disabilities step towards independence," stated a press release. It costs approximately $25,000 to raise and train each dog guide. The organization trains six different types of dog guides, including: canine vision; hearing ear; service, for those with a medical or physical disability; seizure response; autism assistance; and diabetic alert.
