SERVICE RD. 2363 North Ser vice Road Just East of Bronte Rd. Oakville QEW 905-847-5555 A single tear hung on Alysia DaSilva's right cheek. Like the goalie who had just played her last Provincial Women's Hockey League game, it couldn't go back, but it wasn't quite ready to move on either. "It was an exciting game. It's just too bad...," the third-year netminder said, her voice trailing off following the Mississauga Chiefs' 2-1 double-overtime loss to the Whitby Wolves in Sunday's PWHL final. DaSilva had done all she could. Playing in front of a hometown crowd at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, she turned aside a career-high 49 shots. For four periods she matched Whitby goalie Kassidy Sauve, a member of Canada's world under-18 gold medal-winning team, with each of them allowing just one goal. Then, in the opening minute of the second overtime period, Whitby's Ryhen McGill took a bank pass off the boards and broke in on the right wing. As she reached the faceoff circle, she wired Whitby's 51st shot over DaSilva's shoulder and under the crossbar to give the Wolves their second straight championship. DaSilva slumped forward at the edge of her crease until teammate Caitlyn Sadowy arrived to console her. "Completely heartbroken," DaSilva, who was named Mississauga's player of the game, tweeted later. The longer the game went on, the more it looked like the Chiefs were destined to win their first league title. Mississauga had won three of its four round-robin games at the championship tournament in overtime. In the semifinals, DaSilva could only watch as teammate Amelia Boughn backstopped the Chiefs to a 2-1 shootout victory over Toronto. Back in net for the final, DaSilva held her team in the game. The Chiefs -- missing the league's leading scorer, Victoria Bach, due to suspension for head contact in an earlier game -- tied the game early in the third period as Oakville's Lindsay Agnew assisted on a marker by Stephanie Sucharda. Both teams generated chances through the remainder of the third and first overtime period. Shortly after the tying goal, DaSilva was down but got her blocker up to deflect a Whitby shot over the net. In the final minute of regulation, a blocked shot went to Whitby's Jaime Fox at the side of the net but DaSilva slid across to rob her of a sure goal. "We wouldn't have made it as far as we did without our goaltending this weekend," said Agnew. "Alysia stood on her head for us all weekend." Agnew, 16, also had a strong showing at the tournament, following up a rookie season in which she had 25 points in 37 games and won a silver medal with Ontario Blue at the national under-18 championships. "She's a very strong young girl who understands her abilities," said Mississauga coach Jerry Turi. "She's going to be a force in the league." Agnew had a goal and four assists in six games, including a pair of assists in Mississauga's 2-1 overtime win over Brampton. "Winning four overtime games, it just shows that we never gave up," said Agnew. "It's tough to lose like that but hopefully we can (win it all) next year." For DaSilva, there is no next year. She will head to Princeton University in the fall. And though she was denied a league championship, she has not played her final game for the Chiefs, who will play in the Ontario Women's Hockey Association championships beginning today (Thusday) with a schedule split between Mississauga (today and Sunday) and Oakville (Friday and Saturday). "I think we proved ourselves, that we deserved to be here," DaSilva said, wiping away the tear from under her eye. "I believe we can (win provincials). Hopefully we can pull it off (this) weekend." Notes: Though her team won just once, Oakville's Katie Bidulka was outstanding in net for Brampton at the PWHL tournament. She stopped 108 of 113 shots for a .956 save percentage in four games.
