Flynn finally gets Cabinet post continued from p.1 and Madeleine Meilleur to Attorney General from Community Safety, replacing John Gerretsen who becomes chair of cabinet, filling in for Jeffrey in that role. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said Wynne's moves are "a little like shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic." In keeping with that nautical theme, Horwath said Jeffrey's departure is tantamount to "jumping ship" from a minority Liberal government that has had several senior members announce they will not run in the next election. They include Government House Leader and Government Services Minister John Milloy, Gerretsen, as well as former ministers Rick Bartolucci and Donna Cansfield. Health Minister Deb Matthews, who is deputy premier, said Jeffrey has been a "strong member" of cabinet and caucus, serving as chair of cabinet as well. "She will definitely be missed but I am confident that we have got lots of bench strength." Finance Minister Charles Sousa, who represents Mississauga South, wished Jeffrey well in her campaign for mayor. "I look forward to continuing to work with her on the initiatives that matter in the Peel Region," Sousa said. In announcing her departure as MPP for Brampton-Springdale, Jeffrey said she plans to register as a candidate for the city's mayoralty soon in hopes of replacing embattled incumbent Susan Fennell, who has faced questions about her salary and spending. 7 | Wednesday, March 26, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "I want to provide some clarity as to why I'm leaving," said Jeffrey, crediting former Progressive Conservative Premier Bill Davis for pushing her to run. Taking aim at Fennell, Jeffrey, who was elected an MPP in the 2003 Liberal sweep by former Premier Dalton McGuinty, said "respect for taxpayers is an extraordinarily important quality." That may be a tough sell for Jeffrey coming from a Liberal government that spent $1.1 billion to cancel power plants in Oakville and Mississauga and has been tarnished by poor oversight of questionable financial dealings at the ORNGE air ambulance service and eHealth Ontario in the past, said New Democrat MPP Jagmeet Singh (Bramalea-Gore-Malton). "The Liberal track record is not the greatest," he said. "It raises some questions if the campaign is going to be about appropriate spending." Singh called Jeffrey's resignation, leaving the riding open, "a huge opportunity for us" in the NDP to gain a seat also sought by the Progressive Conservatives. Wynne credited Jeffrey as a "strong voice for fiscal responsibility" as a member of the minority Liberal government's treasury board seeking savings and efficiencies as the government fights to slay a deficit of almost $12 billion. The resignation of Jeffrey leaves the Liberals with 48 seats at Queen's Park, including Speaker Dave Levac, to 37 for the Progressive Conservatives and 21 for the NDP . There is one vacant spot in the 107-seat Legislature. For reaction on Flynn's cabinet post, see Thursday's Oakville Beaver. Park Lexus. into a PUT ON YOUR DRIVING GLOVES. Fareshare gears up for Easter drive Fareshare food bank is asking people to be extra generous for its upcoming Easter food drive. "The food bank is very dependent on the Easter food drive, as the food collected at this time of year has to last until the Thanksgiving food drive, which is six months after," said Fareshare volunteer president Nancy Bromberg. Food bank needs change annually, said Bromberg. This year, Fareshare is particularly short of cold breakfast cereal, baby cereal, 500 gram jars of peanut butter and chunky stews. A complete list is available on Fareshare's website at www. oakvillefoodbank.com. "We have been very fortunate to be able to add a number of fresh offerings to our grocery cart," said Bromberg. Items such as apples, oranges, bananas, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and onions are now a regular staple of the food bank along with the non-perishables collected in food drives. The food drive begins Saturday, April 5 and runs until April 19. Drop-off bins are at all Oakville grocery stores, fire stations and at Fareshare at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6.
