www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, November 29, 2013 | 14 Shoebox Project for Shelters to benefit Halton Women's Place The Shoebox Project for Shelters is coming to Oakville to help support local women in need approaching the holiday season. The not-for-profit, charitable initiative was founded in 2011 by Caroline Mulroney Lapham and Jessica, Vanessa and Katy Mulroney and collects small gifts packaged in decorated shoeboxes and distributes them to women in shelters just before the holidays. "These shelters provide emergency and transitional shelter and services to women who are homeless because they flee abuse or difficult living situations, are poor, afflicted with mental illness or new Canadians in need of assistance," stated a news release. "These shoeboxes brighten the holiday season and let the women know they are special and not forgotten. They are filled with items that a woman would enjoy but not splurge on herself in times of difficulty." Those looking to participate in the initiative can put together a fully-wrapped, unsealed shoebox filled with items, including: · combs and brushes · body or hand lotions · gift cards -- include value of the card and a receipt, if possible · bus/subway tickets or tokens, or phone cards · shampoo and conditioner, bodywash, deodorant, and perfume · scarves, hats and gloves · toothbrushes · makeup -- no concealers or foundations · candy, chocolate, or cookies (nut-free products) · inspirational sayings or cards Items must be packaged, sealed and unused, and kept at a value of approximately $50. Donations can be currently dropped off at the following locations until Dec. 20: Integra Tire, 616 York St. (Speers Road and Third Line); ellephysio, 232 South Service Rd. E. (QEW and Trafalgar Road); and The Lounge Salon, 154 Kerr St. (Kerr and Rebecca Streets).
