Troy McHarg, Town Clerk Town of Milton By Stephanie Thiessen CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF A delar ot almost,ý a mont11m IlheiL opening of Glen Eden Ski and Snowboard Centre has resulted in a revenue decrease of about $750,000 compared to last year. Mother Nature was to blame for the delay, with temperatures not cold enough to make snow. The centre opened January 13 instead of the planned December 16. A Glen Eden progress report from Kevin Keith, director of Conservation Lands Services, was received by Conservation Haltons (CH) executive committee at its meeting January 25. The report states that, as of the beginning of January, revenues were down the aforementioned amount compared to the same time last year because of the late start to the season and the cancellation of the centres Christmas camps. "Although we have been able to control our expenses by placing a freeze on ail discretionary spending and putting our seasonal staff on-call, our projected $400,000 profit for this sea- son will obviously not be met," the report states. Another report by Keith that went before the board yesterday states the preliminary projected profit for this season is estimated at just $55,000. Revenues are expected to be about $1 million short of the budgct target, the result of the late start to the season are listed in the first report. They include transferring some full- time staff to different CH departments, moving the snowmaking crew to the hazardous tree removal program, push- ing back the start of the eight-week les- son program by one week, offering sea- son pass holders free access to CH's conservation areas and negotiating dis- counts for season pass holders at Horseshoe Resort in Barrie. It was also recently decided the tube park will remain closed, as it did last year, due to the slow start to the season, so staff can focus on the ski/snowboard operation. Enhanced marketing initiatives will aim to increase the number of visitors for the rest of the season. Glen Eden usually remains open for skiing and snowboarding into March. The report admits its been a very challenging season, but stated staff is far from ready to give up. "Staff are optimistic and committed that with colder temperatures and win- try weather, the remainder of the sea- son will be successful with strong visi- tations and guest experience," it reads.
