On February 28, two men showed up ai the Speyside Gas and Convenience store on Regional Road 25. One man approached a cashier and purchased a low-pniced item and paid for it with a large bill, police said. While the second man distracted other people from what was happen- ing, the first man asked the cashier to, change some larger bils for smaller bills, police said. He then kept changîng his mmnd as to what denominations he wanted until the cashier was confused as to how much he ôwed the suspect and he handed over too much. The two men then Ieft the store with about $400 more than when they cntcrcd, police said. Ihree Halton Hilîs-area husînesses were targeted with the samne scam the following month. Two of the four incidents were recorded on surveillance cameras, and still photos were obtained. After a lengthy investigation, police were able to identify one of the two sus- pects. Police allege the same suspect was connected with numerous similar inci- dents across Ontario, and charges are pending in other junisdictions. An arrest was made January 9. A 39-year-oîd Hamilton man has heen charged with four counts each of theft under $5,000 and fraud under $5,000. The second suspect remains uniden- tified.
