A lengthy standoff continued for about 16 hours. The incident started ai about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when the family of a 50- year-old Peru Road man called police for help in dealing with the dîstraught man, Halton Regional Police said. Police wouldn't disclose bis condi- tion, but said they were concemned about the mans mental state. Officers began searcbing for the man, who returned to bis borne jusi before 6 p.rn. and retreated insîde. Dci. Sgt. Peter Hodgson said officers spoke wvith the man and înied to calin bim, but bc wasn't co-operative and wouldn'î allow medîcal treatment. The area was secured and a safety perimeter esîablished around the borne. Police negotiators maîntained dia- logue with the man frorn outside the borne in an aîîempt 10 get hirn to sur- render. Due to the lengtby nature of tbe incident and the cold weather, police called in Waterloo Regional Polices Tactîcal Rescue Unit to assisi, Hodgson said. Ofhicers rnaintained contact witb tbe man and bad continuai dialogue witb bim tbrougbout tbe nigbî. The situation became more tenuous wben police learned the man bad poîenîially dangerous devices inside. A searcb later on revealed be had an unloaded bandgun and îwo deacîivated grenades, whicb police seized.
