A6 - The Canadian Champion, Fniday, September 15, 2006 OPINION Inspiring act of hero«ism Marathon of Hope lives on at Sundayý Temy Fox Run \PWith the fifth anniversary of 9/Il in our thoughts thîs week, so too are the heroic efforts of tirefighters, police offi- cers and ordinary citizens from that fateful day Unlike our American friends, Canadians are sometimes a little tooi reserved and humble when it comes toi remember- ing and celebrating ils heroes. This weekend, one of Canadas most inspiring acts of heroism - the Marathon of Hope - will be rememhered for having captivated an entire nation and much of the world for 143 days back in 1980. On April 12 that year. 21-year-old Terrance (Terry) Stanley Fox dipped hîs artificial leg mbt the icy north Atlantic water off St. John's, Nfld. Three years earlier Terry had heen diagnosed with a malignant tumour in his night leg that resulted in an ampu- tation ahove the knee. Determineu ta, beat the disease, Ten-y envisioned rning across Canada in support of cancer research. For faur andu a haîf manths, hie averaged a gruelling 42 km (26 miles) each day, taking bum through six provinces. On September 1, outside Thunder Bay, Ont., bis dreain was halted by the spread of cancer tai bis lungs. "When 1 started this run, 1 said that if we ail gave one dol- lar, we'd bave $22 million for cancer research, and 1 don't care man, theres no reason that isn't possible," bie bad said. Terry Fox died lune 28, 198 1. Since bis remarkable act of heroism, the Marathon of Hope lias generated more than $400 million in Canada and arourtd the world in the name of Teny Fox. In Milton, this Sundays Terry Fox Run will he held ai E.C. Drtiiy High School fromn 10 a.m. ici 3 p.m. Wbhile we can't aIl aspire to be heroes, we can still do our part hy joining this year's event, or sponsoning someone who is partlcipatitig. Pledges can be made on-line at wwwterryfoxrun.org. As Fox hîmself once saidî"f you've given a dollar, you are part of the Marathon of Hope." Timing of Furik's comment on development rather convenient DEAR EDIOR: 1 just want to let you and your read- ers know that l'm appalled ai Councillor Ron Furik's notice of motion presented at council August 28 regarding Miltons traffic chaos. 1 have news for Furik and companly The blame for Multons traffic chaos is on the last two municipal and regional counicils, for their lack of foresight in approving 28 suhdivisions over the last six years without adequate roads and transit ta accommodate them. Funik's notice of motion is to ask staff how to slow down Multons growth. That sounds lîke a deathbed repentance to me, when counicil has heen told repeatedly at meetings and through letters to the editor over the last îwo years that theres a big problem. Mayhe the fact that theres an elec- t ee ELECTION on page A7 :Upfront Here's hoping for better service at aur arena concessions The ont good thlng about tbis yearb webwldang lceHawks is tbat theres plenty of room for imprveent. Uufortuately, thse saae cati be sud about die service at our local arena concessions. When Mr. Veuding hIc. was flrst awarded a du'ee-year contract last fail fa operate the food stands at our tbree Milton arenas, 111 admt my skepticismn over dhe North York- hased company's ability to match tbe cpialty of service of long-time operator Scooterls Snack service wss somnewhat biased. After ail, 1 and countiesa Miltonians had corne to tbink of Scott Anders and bis crew tu bighx regard for provlding us in the sports community with a level of service tbat quite franly was bead and shoulders above any- dîig we'd ever enjoyed prior to bis takeover i 1996. 1 certainly didn't believe a sizable out-of-town companry could measure Up. là~ 12months later and Ne got to say thaï, My initial psmsn was certalnly well- founded. OuWskofe1ac periods, openiradier sporadkcaly over the past year 'leprice of nlany food item rose -i $omne cases signiff- icantly - and i my opinon te quality of service ofien left some- tbing to be desired. l've bad numerous like-nunded comments uttered my way sinceâ last September. At the nisk of simpIiýîng the niatter, 1 thbmk this goes back to having an out-of-own operator, wbo 1 stili believe can't posstbly bave the saine connection and coin- milment tai the community as Anders did. Now 1 realize that money is the primary consideration when awarding any contract, ansd tbat Anders - by bis own admission - simply couldn't compete with Mr. Vending when it came te guaranteed rev- S enue for the Town. But 1 bave to wonder if Mr. Vending% substan- tially-higher bid was based on ýr unrealistic projections, and if - Anders' proven track record for -J quality service and willingness ta, ,2 give back ta, the community per- h aps shauld have been mare of a factor ait decision time. With a recent cbange in man- agement and Memorial Arenas food stand expcîed ta re-open for tonightIs lceHawks garne, perhaps it's time we critics give Mr. Vending a second chance. But unleas thetelS a dramatic impravement, 1 thinit the Town should re-consider giving these types of contracta to out-of-town companies.
