MA- The Canadien Champion, Friday, September 15, 2006 Regional councillors' pay increases approved tncoming regionai counicittors are going to make about $2,500 a year more than expected thanks to a deci- sion made by Hatton councit Wednesday. Councit approved the raise that witt go into effect December 1, taking councillors' salaries from $36,535 to $39,168. A boost in the regionat chair- man's wages - from $144.828 a year to, $147,029 - was also endorsed. The Citizen Advisory Committee on Councit Remuneration, which consists of eight Halton residents, rec- ommended the raises 10 bring count- cil's earnings up to par with other municipatities. The group witi reconvene in two years t0 decide if a fuit salary market review is required. Regional Chairman Joyce Savotine commended the group once again for ils efforts, noting, "its a job we could- n't do effectively because of the awk- wardness of it." The Hatton Regionat Police Services Board is embarking on fiiting the vacant Deputy Chief - Operations position created when Gary Croweii assumed the rote of Chief of Police June 3. ln making the announce- ment, Ken Musgrave, chair of the police services board, said that in the best interests of the service and the community, applications wiii be invited from both internai and externat can- didates. "h must be noted that this decision was taken by the board in fuit recognition of the exis- tence of very talented and high- ly qualilied iindivîduails withîîî the Hatton Regional Police Service," said Musgrave. The decision to futl the vacan- cy at this time is wetcome news, said Crowett, as the pnionties of the police service and the region are addressed. Under the Police Services Act, the board is responsibte for provid- ing adequate and effective police services to, the citizens of Halton Region.
