A motion to that effect put forward by Ward 4 Councillor Wendy Schau was passed by council last Tuesday The strategy is designed to address Halton's housing needs until 2015 and beyond and contains five major strate- gic directions - promoting healthy communities, encouraging and protect- ing affordable housing, encouraging and protecting assisted housing, sup- porting independent living and retain- ing and regaining housing - and 40 specific recommendations for action. While the majority of counicil mem- bers supported Schaus motion, fellow Ward 4 Councillor John Challinor said he couldn't endorse it. He said he thinks its dangerous to lend support to something that may have implications on the regional tax base "witbout knowing wbat they are." But Schau argued that ber motion simply means the Town supports the Soveraîl principle behind the strategy, flot "every little thing." Sbe said she understands Challinors concerns when it comnes to financial ramifications. "There probably will be (some financil impact), but something needs to be done," Schau said. "It is our responsibility to do what we can to pro- vide a continuum of housing in Milton for t.he people of Milton." She pointed out that the Region did- n't just create the strategy and present it to the Town, but rather the Town was involved in developing it. lI think that means we need to sup- port it," she said. Local resident KarI Reichert also spoke at the meeting and voiced bis support for the strategy and for the Town "to act on the provision of afford- able housing in Milton."
