These days, researchers are working fowards using the body's natural processes f0 actually heal bones and joints, not just mend them. That's the promise behind wor< by bone spe- cialist Dr. Harvey Goldberg of the University of Western Onfario. Dr Goldberg has spent the pasf ten years studying and collecting detailed information about a group of proteins thaf help produce minerais in bones and are essential f0 their growih. He's used thîs information f0 expeniment vwdth and artficially produce profein fragments (known as pepides) than can help stimulate growth in damaged bones. Dr. Goldberg recently received funding frorn the Canadian Insitutes of Health Research (CIHR) f0 help refine fechnology thiat uses cus- tom-made proteins f0 help regenerate bones. Reflning this technology and demonstraing that if can consisfenly wor< is an important step towards making if commercially available as a medical procedure for patients ibis is good news for patients because the prospect of healing bones is befter in the long term thon just fixing bones, CIHR has a number of funding programs that help researchers commercialize their work, such as the Proof of Pninciple funding received by Dr. Goldberg.
