The Canadien Champion, Friday, July 14, 2006 - A29 Halton Region's GreenCart Demonstration Program Now Accepts Certif ied Compostable Plastic Bags The GreenCart is like a Blue Box for your kitchen scraps. Kitchen scraps (including meat and bones), paper towels, coffee grounds and more are now being collected at the curb in the GreenCart from five demonstration neighbourhoods across Halton, instead of in a regular garbage bag. The GreenCart demnonstration program is off to a great start! In the first six months 172,660 kilograms of food and compostable paper waste was diverted from the landfill, the equivalent of 32,394 bags of garbage. Keep up the good work! Each summer Halton Region's Health Department tests water quality at recreational beaches throughout Halton. Beaches are testsd from June until the firsi week of September. Beaches are selected based on use for swimming and other water sports. Samples are taken weekly at ail beaches, except Burlington's Beachway Park North and South, where samples are taken twice a week. Saniples are also taken if conditions change. Before heading to the beach, you are encouraged to oeil Access Malton, Halton Region's customer service centre, to obtain information about the water quality at Malton's beaches.
