I Union could setrike in ýfali The union representing those who work with at.-risk and special needs stu- dents at the Halton District School Board expects to be in a legal strike position just prior to the start of the next school year. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF), District 20, Halton Professional Student Services Personnel (PSSP) bargaining unit bas asked the Ministry of Labour for a No Board Report. The step will put the unit in a position to take legal strike action by August 26. The action was taken after negotia- tions with board personnel with the assistance of a provincial conciliator June 16 failed to break the impasse. PSSP represents more than 40 staff, including psycho-educational consult- ants, social workers, speech and lan- guage pathologisos, and child and youih counisellors \working with at-nisk andl special needs students in Haltons public elementary and secondary schools. "Our members bave been very patient, but we have now been working waithout a contract for nearly two years and see no sign that the Halton board is senious about negotiating a seulement," said Willi Steinke, president of the Distrnct 20 PSSP bargaining unit. Sandra Sabli, executive officer of OSSTE and chair of the negotiating tcaîl, said, "The board cannot expeet to reiaîn staff and provide necessary conti- nuiîy in dclîvering professional support services for Ilalion studenîs when îî isn't wi llîng to address the unique salary and xorkload issues of ihose who do ibis work. Rock climber fails 30 feet A Toronto man suffered non-life threatening injuries afier falling whîle rock climbîng at Raîtlesnake Point Conservation Area Monday. Police said the 38-year-old man was climbing with two friends at the park locaîed at Appleby Line and Steeles Avenue. He had made three climbs, and was attempîing to do a final one as the lead climber. At about 7:30 p.m., the man was about 30 feet up the rock face and had set about tîve anchors when he called out he was falling. The two top anchors gave way and the victim feil to the ground, landing on bis right side. His seven-year-old daughter was watching ber father elimb when he feil. Police, the fire department, emer- gency medical services, Conservation Halton and an air ambulance attended the scene.
