TheyJI enjoy a major financial shot in the arm thîs year through Ontarios Quest for Gold fundîng, a program designed to keep top athletes competing for Ontario. lwasa-Madge golden ait national trials Kevin lwasa-Madge finds himself in some highly select company these days, aller a suc- cessful trip out west last weekend. Going 4-0 in Sundays national team trials in Edmonton, the t6-year-old Miltonian became only the second E.C. Drury High School wrestler to ever make the national team and the first to, win the trials. A two-time OFSAA participant, the 54 kg. Spartan reigned supreme in the cadet class - punctuating his golden performance with a 2- 1, 2-0 decision over Strathcona, Albertas Nicholas Raimonelo. That capped a day-long trend for lwasa- Madge, whose exceptional defence resulted in just two points against him for aIl four victo- ries, the first of wbich was over the defending national cadet champ from Regina. With Sunday's perfect record - which gave him a teamn record 15 medals for the ses- son - lwasa-Madge will compete at July's Canada Cup in Guelph and then head to, Cuba for a training camp and senies of competitions. Equally impressive but not quite as fortunate dur- ing the juvenile champi- onships earlier in the week- end, he finished fifth > capping his efforts with a razor-thin 2-1, 2-1 triumph. Also bringing home a Kevin national medal was recent Iwasa-Madge OFSAA champ Alan Moffat, who struck silver in the 58 kg. juvenile divi- sion. One of the most improved wrestlers around over the past year, the t 7-year-old Drury grappler wasn't quite able tn truly test himself in the finals against eventual champ Vincent Cormier of New Brunswick. Taken down awkwardly in the early stages of the match, Moffat sustained a separated shoulder and was subsequently pinned by the heavily-favoured Maritimer. Pending a speedy recovery, as the Ontanio champ and top Ontario finisher last weekend, Moffat is a leading contender to be selected to Team Ontario for the Commonwealth Championships this summer in Scotland. He reached last weekends final with two shutout victories, whitewashing a Saskatchewan opponent in straight 6-0 deci- sions and then getting past Ontarios Ryan Lee 3-0, 2-0. Rookie Bobby Filîman, 14, rounded out Drury's national championship contingent with a seventh-place showing in a highly- competitive 42 kg. cadet class. The OFSAA bronze medalist felI a spîit- second short of reaching the medal round, as he was awarded a third-round. match-winning point secured at the buzzer against Reginas Thomas Ostepowich that was overtumned by the mat judge. The decision was protested, but the Spartans' appeal was denied. Anderson IceHawks' new coach Excited by Mitons ncw development statu By Steve LeBlanc CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF There'l be a mighty familiar face behind the lceHawks' bench this faîl. A two-time assistant coach here in 1995-96 and 2003 - and one of the most recognizable names in the Provincial Jr. A ' League's Western Conference - Jay ___ Anderson is now on board as Milton's new hesd coach. The 38-year-old Georgetown resi- Jay Anderson dent - who just wrapped up a sixth stint with his hometown Raiders - accepted the position Tuesday. Just a day earlier it was announced that he'd declined to return to Georgetown. This was due to a change in rank for general manager jack Moon - whos also parted ways with the Raiders, which as of press time were still in the process of betng purchased by Campbellville's Rick Heinz. "It feels good, I've been trying to get here (Milton) a few times," said Anderson, whos coached in the West off and on for the better part of two decades now and was the divisions 2001/02 Coach of the Year - during a rather succesaful rebuilding period with the Oakvtlle Blades. Overseeing operations for Milton since their affiliation with the lceDogs was announced last month, Mississauga general manager Dave Brown said with Anderson the lceHawks get a proven 'development' coach. e see ANDERSON on page Ai 9 CRosswý-NDS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB * 1 8-hole Championship Golf Course " Driving Range and Practice Facility * Licenced Lounge and Bar * Golf lournaments " Weddings andReceptions " Private and Corporate Functions 6621 Guelph Lae, Burliagton, Ontario Tel: (905) 319-5991 (bast aoutli ofDey RlU) www.crosswindsgolf.com -7 - j'jLý fýr'= É7À Lmu.-
