The amendment applies ta aIl single-family, semi-detached, and town homes, whether owner accupied or rented. Homeowners - this may mean purchasing additional smoke alarms and installing them, on every level of their home and outside ail sleeping areas. Failure tai do so could result in a ticket of $235.00. Landiords - you must make sure your renta praperties comply with the law. Individual landlards who feul tai comply wit h the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements can face a fine of up ta $50,000.00. Tenants of Rentai Properties - tenants are encouraged ta contact their landlords immediately if they do not have the required number af smoke alarms. Once smoke alarms are installed, tenants cannot remove batteries or lamper with the smoke alarm in any way. If they do so, the tenant could be subject ta a ticket'for $235.00I. This amendmrrent came into eftect March 1, 2006. The Fire Oepartment strongly recommends that owners ensure their properties are in campliance with the provincial law.
