The age-old issue came up at a recent Halton social services meeting, where survey resuits showed Milton e leme nta ry children contin- ue ta have the oFuk worst teeth Rin Fn the region - something the health department us saying may be closely linked ta the lack of fluaride in local water. After laoking aver the numbers that show, in mast cases, that Milton yautbs have a higher prevalence of dental decay than thase in ather parts of Haltan, Burlingtan Cauncillor Rick Craven questianed when health and well-being will ovemrde the anxieties and concernas that are out there about 1fluoride. Furik stepped up ta staunchly defend Miltans position on the issue. "We're pretty passionate about our water up there (in Milton). Please leave it alone," he said. He nated he can't recaîl reading more than one letter ta the editar in local papers that expressed support for fluoridation. A referendum was held in the early '70s on the issue and about 70 or 80 per cent of Milton residents turned fluori- dation down. Halton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nasal told the committee that he bas recommended Miltons well water supply be fluoridated in the past, but pointed out he believes Milton resi- dents' wishes need ta be recognized. "l'm basically saying l'mr leavtng it (fluoridation) as my recommendation," he said. "Let democracy take care of the rest. " About 33,000 Miltontans are on nan-fluaridated well systems, while se.
