The compost, available at the Halton Waste Management Site, is created from residential yard waste picked up from curbsides as part of Halton's strategy to divert waste from the land- fil] and is integral to the Region maintaining one of the highest waste diversion rates in the GTA - 41.6 per cent. "Halton is committed to supporting waste diversion through composting," said Halton Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline. waste can be tumed into compost and reused as a soil amendment for gardens instead of being thrown away. Composting not only benefits our residents by providing them with top-quality product for their gardens, but also helps extend the life expectancy of our landfill site." Twice a year, residents are invited to collect compost as a thank you for supporting the envi- ronmentally-friendly initiative. "Last year, during our spring and fall compost give away days, 8,030 Halton households col- lected Regional compost to help their gardens grow. Our residents generously donated 1,026 boxes of food - that's almost 12 tonnes," said Ms Savoline. "In addition to their generous food donations, a record of $1 2,320 was collected to help support the important work of local food banks. Halton residents should be proud. Residents must bring their own bags or containers, up to a maximum of seven per household, and a shovel in order to bag their own compost. This spring, more than 1,000 tonnes of refined compost will be available to residents. Compost will be available until May 16 at 5400 Regional Road 25. The need for these infrastructure components has been identified in the Region's "Water & Wastewater Master Plan Review" adopted by Regional Council in March, 2003. The study is being conducted in accordance with the requirements of a Schedule B project as detailed in the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (June 2000). A key component of this Class Environmental Assessment is consultation with interested stakeholders (public and regulatory agencies). A Public Information Centre (PIC) has been scheduled to provide stakeholders with an opportunity to meet the Project Team, review the study scope and discuss issues related to the project including assessment of: (1) a wide range of options for providing water, wastewater, sewage pumping and forcemain infrastructure to satisfy the needs identified in the "Water & Wastewater Master Plan Review", and (2) options for the crossing of watercourses and the placement of the new watermain, wastewater mains, sewage pumping station and forcemain.
