The bacteria was reveaied in water sain- pies taken at Kelso Conservation Area by the Haiton Region Health Depariment Tuesday. Haiton l-ealth Promoter Sharon Little said the levels could have been raised from the recent heavy ram., which can cause tur- bulence and run-off from nearby agricul- tural lands. Another water test was being done ai press time yesterday in hopes of opening tise beach this weekend. Conservation Haiton Marketing Co-ordi- nator Susan O'Nei said Keiso bas main- tained such a good track record for water safety because of a bird screen being tnstailed in the be-ach area and improve- ments to land use practices upstream, such as keeping ivestock away from streains. "We're hoping that the (bacteria) level is due to recent weather conditions" she said. Local beaches used for recreational pur- poses are tested on a weekiy basis. or if conditttons change. Ms Litttie expiained that a water sample cao have up to I(X) colonies of e-coui per 1(0) i of water. At Kelso. there were 121 colonies ot E. coui. Conservation I-aiton satd the bacteria can cause car, nose and throat infections, stomach upsets, skin rashes and diarrhea. Those most susceptible are young children, the elderiy and people with depressed tmmune systemrs. Local residents looking to swim cisc- where in Halton this weekend won't have many places to choose from as Kelso is one of six beaches in the region iied as unsafe for swimming. The only beach the health department bas deemed safe is Beachway Southt in Burlington. File photo by GRAHAM PAINE Kelso attracts thousands of people ta its beach each summer.
