But despite Hanson Bricks business dilemma, Halton counicillors mnsist they won't quicken their approval process and will ensure ail the proper information is in before they consider giving the okay. Hansons vioe-president, Arnold Nomrs, made a presentation to the Regions plan- ning and public works committee Wednesday morning explaining the com- panys critical need to open a 71-acre extraction quanry west of Tremaine Road, south of No. 1 Sideroad, with a lifespan of 50 to55 years. The proposed site, a fanning property that also borders Milton and Oakville, is Iocated north of Hansons current opera- tions. The land in question doesn't allow for a quanry pit. Halton is one of a number of agencies that would need to give zoning arnendment approvals for the quanry. The City of Burlington and thse Province must also give their approvals. lhe company fn-st made an application to the Region in thse spring of 2003. Mr. Nomrs told the committee that Hanson "supports thse need to protect the rural setting," and acknowledged a quanry cant exist amicably in an urban setting. Mr. Nomrs said Hanson needs shale to produce what's called a "bufi" brick. Its a blond-coloured brick thats in high demand for industrial construction to build struc- tures like hospitals and achools. While having thse sanie strength as tradi- tional brick, buif brick is prided for its aes- thetic value. Hanson, Mr. Nomrs told the coniinittee, needa to purchase thse potential quarry property by mid-August so it would like to know there's approval, in principle, from the commnittee. The current 35-acre shale quanry has been depleted and Hanson hopes to ulti- mately have ail of the necessary approvals to begin quarry extraction at thse new site in the fail. The quarry is vital to Hantons need to build a new $60-million brick manufactur- ing plant, Mr. Nomis said. One of the three plants, more than 40 years old, is set to close in 2010. Without a replacement, Nonris warned that 80 to 100 jobs would be in 'jeopardy." The company has a total workforce of about 450 people. Hanson has askcd for an exemption to the ministers greenbelt order intruduced last December, which placed a moratorium on development outaide of designated urban areas. A meeting has been seheduled for June 14 with the Ministry of Municipal Affaira and Housing. "To help us in tis process we are requesting council to support thse principle of a quany use as a rural use,' Nomrs said. "This does not, in our view, prematurely detennine nor prejudice your consideration of our application. We are a con-unitted Haiton region employer." But thse comnlittee members couldn't approve it in principle. * see REPORT on page 7
