A Metroland Community Newspaper ,MýcTavi*sh asks for recount in race r*Sm BY JASON MISNER The Champion John McTavish bas officiai- ly asked for a recounit after losmng by 20 votes to Paul Tate in the race for Milton's public school board trustee. "There's been a defanite cali fromn a lot of my supporters to go for that," Mvr. McTavish said. "With 3,000 votes cast, 20 votes, ia fot a big dif- ference at ail." Unofficial results fromn Monday night's election show Mr. McTavish garnered. 3,327 votes versus Mr. Tate's 3,347. It's expected the Town will make the voting numbers offi- ciai today. Mr. McTavish - who said he thought the election would ha extremely close - filed a request with the HaIton District Sehool Board yesterday, following the pro- tocol under the Elections Act. For the first time, Milton votes were counted using electronic machines, but Mr. McTavish said that doesn't make it an infallible sys- tem. -IThere are different cases fromn the GTA where recounits have been held because of the electronic procesa flot beimg 100 per cent," ha said. Town clerk Troy McHarg, noting there were no reported problema counting the ballots, said that only a rie vote camres an automatic recousit. Since that isn't the case, the public achool board muaI pass a resolution supportllsg one. 'Me achool board is scheduled to meet Wednesday, but it's flot clear if it will vote as that time on whether to permit a recount. Considermng the slim margin, pub- lic achool board Chair Ethel Gardiner said she would probably support a recousit. Mr. Tate said he doesn't object to Mr. McTavish's pursuit of a recousit, but doesn't think a lot wiIl change. "I don't have an issue with it," ha said. "Lt seems the machine count is highly accurate." Rather than concerning himself with a recousit, Mr. Tate said he's preparing as the Milton achool board trustee. He said he's aIready fielded between 30 and 40 phone cails about school issues. The vote recousit would be camred out by the Town and would have to be completed within 15 days of the school board passing a resolution, Mr. McHarg said. As required by law, the recount would have to involve the re-scan- ning of the election ballots because that's how the ballots were counted originally, he said. Mr. McTavish ultimately bas the option of going to the Ontario Superior Cubat of Justice to ask for a recourit. If the request goes before the courts, a judge could mile it be done by hanti, Mr. McHarg said. ,Jason Misner can be reached at jmisner@miltoncanadianchampi- on.com. e e $ *999 # A4f «Using Communication to Build Better Communities" Comment ......6-7 iS Report ....... 8 Datelins ....... 16 Sports ......19-20 Classifiod .... .22-24 A&E........
