Tis year's theme is: AIl I want for Christmnas iv ... ? 0f course, if you ask committee mcm- bers what thcy'd like, they'd say hclp on the comrnfttec and more volunteers on the day of thse parade. Organizing an event like the anasual parade takes hundseds of hours of volun- teer work. The current committec iv made up of representatives of service clubs, com- munity groups, organizations and individu- aIs with help from the Towtn of Milton. On thcy day of the parade, there's a nced for up to 100 volunteers to be clowns, carry bamiers and hand out stuff. It qualifies for community service hours students necd to graduate. Your-0000ý_ ep1 ;1 /,Region says it will seek t:VWhydthe input from the public in contracting study By JASON MISNER The Champion ln an attempt to quash concerrus, Halton Region says there will be public consulta- tion into a study that will determine if con- tractmng out services at its long-terni case facilities is cost-cfflcient. Adelmna Urbankai, Halton's commission- er of social and corntity services, said there will be an 'opportunrity for various forms of input" mnto the four- to six-month long organizational structure study. "Because we're so early in the procesa, nothing has been outlined yet," she said. -Halton does have quite a history of con- sultation." The Region has corne under fire for the organizational study as well for the dcci- sion to îay off four positions in hairdress- mng and foot care, effective January 2. Residents of Allendale and their fanailies, and thic Ontario Public Servtce Employees' Union (OPSEU) representing the 300-plus Allendale employces said they're particu- larly worried the study won't include their opinions about contracting out. The study is being undertaken because Halton will be opening twvo more long- terrn case facilities - in addition to the Allendale site on Ontario Street South - in Oakville and Burlington in the next year or so. The departrncnts bcing considered for contracting out are laundry, rnaintenance and housekeepmng. Ms Urbanksi said tse thinka there's a misperception that decisions about con- tracting out services bave been made. She stressed that's not thse case. "We're early in the throcs of tis," she said, noting there wtll be a staff meeting in about two weeks to start identifymng the study process. Brenda CatI, whose 84-year-old mother iv a resident of Allendale, said she's happy to hear the Region said it will consult the public as part of the study. "We're certainly going to be more informed about how rny mother iv going to be taken care of," said Ms Caîl, an Oakville resident. "Thiis iv the only way to go." She just hopes that public consultation will be legitimate. "Is it gomng to bc ail srnoke and mirrors?" she asked. L.egitimnacy iv alto what 'Ferry Moore, representative of thse OPSEU for Allendale, hopes for when it cornes to public input. "I'm glad they're sayiasg chat and I thiink the more public, the better," he said. But he said he questions chat because there was no public input sought before thse hairdressmng and foot-case position lay-offs were announced. "TMe proof ivs mche pudding for tisese things," he said. "I rernain skcptical tisis iv a truc investigation." Jason Misner can be reached at jmiis- ner@miltoncanadianchanpion.com. à. To i ve longer.
