6 - The Canadien Champion, Tueaeiay, Novembér 11, 2003 ~COMMN Remembrance Dayv, election perfect fit It's fittmng that the two biggest events ini our town this week are the municipal election and Remembrance Day activities. The two events go hand-mn-hand smnce it's because of our war veter- edm ans that we have the freedom. to eleet our own govemment. It's people like Canadian Army veteran Huck Kelman who we have to thank for that right. As reported elsewhere in this newspaper, Mr. Kelman, a Milton native, served in the Canadian Army from 1940 to 1945. He fought for freedom in such countries as Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. While many Miltonians enlisted, not everyone made it home. Today we honour those that lost their lives. We honour them by wearing a poppy, attendîng a service or taking the time for two minutes of silence. Going to the polis yesterday was also a way we showed our appreci- ation. Mr. Kelman may find it. hard to speak of his experiences in the Second World War, but Miltonians spoke loud and clear on what it was ail about every time they cast a ballot. Most of aIl, we love the town of Milton. Sadly, we have no forrn of public transportation to get us into Oakville or Mississauga on a time- ly sehedule. This takes me to my greatest dis- appointment, which is the GO Transit bus system. After rush hour in the moming, you better have your own trans- portation if you need to go out at a specific time. On Thursday, Oct. 23 my daugh- ter waited for the Milton GO Bus ai 1:45 p.m. to go toi Meadowvsle Town Centre When my daughter got on the bus and handed the driver a $20 bill to psy for ber $3.40 ride, the driver said he had no change for a $20. My daughter asked him if he car- ried a change belt or coin dispenser. The driver's reply was, "It's too early in the day." My daughter ssked the fellow passengers if anyone had change for her $20. Nobody on the bus had change, so my daughter had to get off the bus. There's no other transit systemn in Milton and there are no vanety stores or any businesses at Hawthorne Village at which to make change. This young girl had to get to her part-time job in Mississauga for ber 4 p.m. stars time. Could this bus driver flot have given this young girl a free ride and informed ber to have the exact fare in the future? U.
