6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday JuIy 8, 2003 SCOMMENT National sex offender registry badly flawed Whle the headline on the front page of last Tuesday's paper local resîdents on sex offender registry' may be alaî-ming, residents should flot, as Halton police suggest, panic. Ail 66 offenders «ii Haltoni are effectively tracked by authorities. Each is following the conditions set out as part of being on the registry and none are considered dangerous to the public. However, the registry ists only the sex offenders known to police. How many others there are is anyone's guess, but judging from recent incidents it's safe to assume there are far 100 many perverts and sick minds walking our streets. Just read the lead story in today's police blotter opposite this page. That's why it's imperative that the federal government's plan for a national sex registry - Bill C-23 - be retooled before being adopted. Under the Liberals' plan, the national registry won't contain photos, won't allow for a radius search and will only include sex offenders convicted after the registry opens. In effect, it will remain empty until someone is convicted. If our lawmakers insist on not being tough on these deviants they should take any step necessary to ensure the public's safety.
