eýFormer hockey great gets Rotary award at tourney Tht Canadian Champion, Tuesday, September 24, 2002 -3 By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion Johnny Bower isn't exactly the most famliar naine among young hockey fans. But recognize him or not, many of those same youngsers have the former goaltending great 10 thank for their health and general well-being. The two-time Venzina Trophy winner and four-rne Stanley Cup champ has spent the lions share of his post-NHL days as a staunch supporter of Greater Toronto Area ebjîdrens charities. Hes reserved much of that time and effort in aid of the Rotary Clubs GTA chapters - particularly their annual charity golf tournament. which for 16 years now has benefited Variety Village and Peel Partners For A Drug Free Comrnunity. I honour of his long-standing dedication to the organization. Rotary Club members from Milton and Mississauga presentcd Mr. Bower with a Paul H-arris Fellowship - the highest distinction available 10 a non-Rotarian - during the l6th annual golf toumna- ment at Granite Ridge Golf Club Wednesday. "You have to give back 10 the community in a big way (10 earn Paul Harris Fellowship)," said event organizer and long-time Mississauga Rotarian Laurie Williamson. "To give you an idea of how rare this award is. the last one we presented was about 101 tus 12 years to, Mayor Hazel McCallion. "Johnny's always been very supportive ol the tour- nament and to Rotary. You bave tus rcmember he played hockey before the big rnoney came around. [le gets thousands of dollars for autograpb signing ses- sions. yet he does this every year for free." Known as a mass of few words, Mr. Bower gra- ciously thanked Rotary Club members for the honour and wished them continued success in A their endeav- ourt. But when in impromptu question and answer period came up, the usually quiet Hall of Famer Phu0to by GRAHAM PAINE Johnny Bower (left) and Rotarian Laurie Williamson show orne of the auction items at the fundraising golf tournament Wednesday, short- ly before the hockey great was presented with the Paul Marris Fellowship. opeîsed up with somne spirited and entertaining recol- lections of bis time in the Toronto Maple Lea.s' cage. Speaking of a time when a $5,000 raise seemed like a jackpot, Mr. Bower's most amusing respuinse carne when susmcone asked hirn what the highlight of is career was. "When Ruseket Richard retired." he quipped. Arnong the items auctiuned sff rt the dinner were a jersey autographed by Mr. Bower and two tickets tus Torotos opening game at the Air Canada Centre which came with the added feature of sitting with Mr. Bower and is wife for the evening. The latter item fetched $900 from a young hockey enthusiast. u*75 riser ee' p -ýls vt294 2002 Pontiac. Sunfire 2001 Chev Malibu 20 is 20 uc ea L 4dr auto. ait. pw, pi, tilt.
