6 - The Canadian Champion. Tuesday, January 23, 2001 ~ COMMLNM Please say.",v bell hasn't tolled for agriculture Has the bell finally tolled for agriculture in the region? That question was unexpectedly posed through a Regional golf course study aimed at protecting prime agricultural land from being swallowed up by the seemingly insatiable demnand for local links. Though endorsed by the Halton Agricultural Advisory Committee, local farmers turned out in surprising numbers to, speak against the study at a recent regional planning committee. They seemed to feel that Halton agriculture is going the way of the dodo and the best that cao be done is give farmers the courtesy of selling their land to rich golf course developers at the twilight of their careers How ironic that the Region has corne out wîth its dukes up to fight for 4!Z * farming at a time when those who tilI the soil and tend to the animaIs are ready to-bow out with barely a whimper. So long as there's a pot of gold S o waiting for them, of course. i After spending years scrabbling to make a living from the land without the government subsidies colleagues from other countries enjoy, farmers are justified in desiring a solid return on their investment. cO ic But there must be a way to seil the land without selling it out.$ ~ n Especially by those who have been its guardians for so long. Dear Editoor: 1 watched the Supreme Court trial of Robert Latimer on televi- Sion the other day. Hearing ail the detail finalized in my mind what 1 knew anyway - tbat Mr. Latimer isn't a "murderer". My brother went to school with him and we know he's a compas- sionate man of high deportment and a fine citizen in the communi- ty. The Latimers had reached such a level of frustration with the med- ical system and with the agony of their daughter's pain, which most of us cannot even imagine. They but only bit dead endsn. It's my personal belief that Robert's love for bis littie girl was so strong, so overwhelmingly pow- erful, that he reacbed a peak that could have been termed 'tempo- rary insanity" and perhaps should bave pleadcd that way. It bad noth- ing to do witb her being bandi- clapped; we're ail bandicapped sooner or later. 1 put myseif in bis shoes many times as 1, too, am a very compas- sionate person. t remember hunting rabbits as a kid, on my cousin's snowmobile. 1 neyer bad the beart 10 actually then killed the rabbit 10 ends its misery, but 1 will neyer forget that moment. And when 1 hear of a hunier los- ing a dote with an arrow in il know- ing it neili suffer agony before dying, 1 dont( sleep that night. Yes, 1 have 10 admit that if 1 were in Robert Latimer's shoes I would only hope 10 have the strength 10 do what he did. 0f course. It would be cvrong, but it would be more wrong to tel her die in the agony she was in... and she was dying anyway. Robert Latimer shouldn't be in jail. sought belp for somne sort of pain shoot them but 1 aciLdentally ran Rosa Hingaton relief that Tracey could tolerate, over one once and hurt il badly. 1 Hornby THE CANADIAN CHAMPION Milton really could use more wheelchair taxis Boxs 248.,191 Main Si.
