The board voted 8-2 Wednesday night to implement JK, which bas been consid- ered a few timca in recent years. Last December, thse board rejecteci junior kindergarten, with many trustees support- ing the concept but being concemed about the timing. Shifting circumatances prompteci tome trustees to change their minda about JK, which educates four-year-olda. Thse group consiating of former board members retuming to the new board Sarah Lowe, Dick Haas, Jack Arno and Don Ford as well as the three Conservation Halton (CH) appointees - chair Brian Penman, vice-chair Dennis Gregor and member-at-large Jean Williams - met for a number of reaaons including to fill sev- eral positions on thse new board. CH's Mamnie Piggot nominated Mr. Gregor for foundation board chair. While he accepteci the position, he told the CH board of directors as a meeting the follow- ing day that he wouldn't retain thse posi- tion any longer than the one-year terni. "It allowa the foundation to get back on ila feet," he said. "Rightfully so, the (foun- dation) chair should not be on the (CH) boardl." - e POUICIANS on page 2 she opposed junior kindergarten st December, fearing it wouldn't be impie- mented in her community and would mean reduced early learning grants. "'And with thse $70 mil- lion in grants to improve grades 1 to 3 reading skills, losing early learning grants is not as draatic an issue." Milton Trustee Erica Andrew said there's a strong demand for JK. She said it's useful in providing early identification of learning difficulties and in pronsoting litcracy for young children. "I gave thse board a great deal of research from many sources and with each report, thse research strongly supports junior kindergarten," said Ms Andrew. She added the board'a capital strategic plan provides for equity of accesa to JK. "The coat of retrofitting achools for the program will be covered by new pupil place granta obtained." l'ise board offered JK clasaes for a year in the mid-90a after it waa mandated by thse former NDP provincial govermment. But the program waa dmopped following a govemment change and funding cuta.
