The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, May 30, 2000 -7 * OUR READERS WRITE v School Council says thanks Staff Appreciation Day June 6 deciared at Bishop Reding Dear Editor: We're writing this letter on behalf of the School Council of Bishop Reding Secondary School. The press has given a great deal of cov- erage to the changes that the Harris gov- emment is making to our education system and the resulting outcry by students, teach- ers and school boards. Without getting into the gruesome details or taking sides, we think it's safe to say that teachers have been affected by the changes and that they're not fans of the Harris govemment. There is another side to this story that is often left untold. While most of the attention has been focused on the politics of education at the provincial level, the teachers and staff at our local Catholic high school have been soldiering on. In our view, they have shown remark- able resilience and tremendous dedication to our school and the task of educating our children. Some enlightening examples of what has gone on at our school this year illustrate our point. The Province -didn't complete the new grade 9, curriculum by the start of the school year and released it piecemeal as the year progressed. In addition to teaching the new curricu- lum, teachers huddled in groups before and after school to develop teaching methods, lesson plans and testing methods that didn't previously exist. After school extra help classes were instituted for the many students whose aca- demic foundation didn't support the new curriculum. Full extra-curricular activities have been running throughout the year. And Bishop Reding has fielded 30 inter- collegiate teams in a vtriety of sports. The school community has had the bene- fit of student dances, a superb musical pro- duction, a talent night, a music night and an arts night. The senior band has just retumed from a trip to Philadelphia. Outdoor education students are currently preparing for a trip to Algonquin Park. The list goes on and on. Each of these activities is directed by dedicated, enthusiastic teaching staff serv- ing as volunteer coaches, directors and mentors. Early morning, evening and weekend practices, toumaments and rehearsals often limit the time teachers can spend with their own families. Their passion, their expertise and their caring have truly enriched the lives of our sons and daughters. To Bishop Reding Secondary School's principal, Mrs. Yarema, and to all Bishop Reding staff on behalf of the Bishop Reding school community, and in particu- lar on behalf of the parents of ail Bishop Reding students - we salute you and we thank you.
