8 - The Canadien Champion, Tuesday, November 30,199 v/Mi1ton heritage, history buifis get awards Heritage Milton's Clive Thurston and local historian Ken Lamb honoured By IRENE GENTLE The Champion History moved into the present at last w 1eek's town counicil meeting as two residents received plaques, pins and pats on the back for their part in keeping Milton's heritage alive. Clive Thurston took home a certificate of recognition for his stînt with Herilage Milton, also known as the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Commitlec (LACAC). Mie recognition is customary for.reliring commillce members such as Mr. Thurston. -Mhs is quite a surprise. 1 neyer expect- cd anything like this," lic said. "I'm over- whelmed, almost speechless, which doesn'l happen often." He thankcd council for ils support of thc commitce's efforts. "We are the envy of many LACACs around Ontario and we are the cnvy of other municipalities' LACACs," said Mr. Thuraton. "Nol many gel the support that we get from you in making my job so easy." Parting joke But Mr. Thurston did manage to gel one joking parting shot in at Councillor Rick Day, wbo.was also a part of the LACAC committee. "I'vc cerlainly cnjoyed working with Rick," cracked Mr. Thuraton. "Whcn he showed up." That promplcd Mr. Day 10 respond "Oh, was I on Ihal committee?" Council also put ils regular business on liold 10 congratulate Ken Lamb on his 1999 Hcrilagc Communily Recognition Program Achievemenl from the Ontario Heritage Foundation. And lic réccivcd recognition from the Town for his work in prescrving the history of Milton. Aftcr a move from Montreal almoat 20 ycars ago, Mr.- Lamb, now 77, immerscd himself in local hislory. And he lias shared his knowledge by pcnning the books :Milton Remembers Worid War III and 'P.L. - Inventor of the Robertson Scrcw'. He also played a fundamcntal role in a book cataloguing Milton's historic homes. Understanding that the clock was ticking on these atonies is what compellcd him to put pen to paper, said Mr. Lamnb. 11P.*L. Robertson died in the 1950s and 1 thought he should have a book," he said. "TMe longer we wait, the less likely we'd be 10 get a good story on hum." He faced the same problem with Milton's war-timc participation. 'I thought this wouid be a good time to do a slory and interview these people," said Mr. Lamb. "The velerans are getting older. It was 50 years since the war ended." History repeats itself And Mr. Lamb has lived long enough to believe that the old adage about those not leaming the lessons of history being des- tined to repeat it is truc. "lIt may sound Iile, but once a problem has arisen and there has been an answer to it, probably if that problemt arises again, you can use that same resuit," he said, choosîng his words carefuliy. "Things don't happen exactly the same way twice bot you can gel some ideas from il." Receiving the dual recognition meant as much to Mr. Lamb as the public reaction to his books. Il was pretty proud. 1 put a lot of hours into il," he said. "People have said 'that was a good book,' and that gives you a boost." But thc procesa itself was also a treat. "I enjoyed interviewing," he noted. 'Th1at was a great satisfaction 10 me." More books to corne Other books arc currcntly in the works but first, Mr. Lamb is looking forward 10 putting on a special presentation entitled 'Farewell 10, the 1900s'. It will kick off at 7. p.m. Friday at thc Milton Seniors' Activity Centre, 500 Childa Dr. The evcning will celebrate Uic lives and accomplishments of some of Milton's leading lights before thc century thcy lived in draws 10 a close.
