Members of tihe service's bike patrol team - the Targeted Response and Cyciing Enforcement (TRACE) Unit - are in training and should ha on the road by mid-May. With seven officers assigned to part-time bike patrois in town, it wiil ha the local division's moat concentrated effort ever in using two-wheeled vehicles as a means of fighting crime. "We've seen it enough that we think it's going to work," said Staff Sgt. Roy Smith, who oversees patroi, units in Milton. On bikes, officers are able to easiiy access areas like parks through pathways to combat activities such as drug use, drinking and loitening. Staff Sgt. Smuith said. While such transportation isn't practical in raspond- ing to incidenta like car accidents, bicycles cmn be -used for otiser routine cais, especially in heavy trafflc, he said. "Their response times are actually quite good because they cau go as fast as a car," hie said. Ai municipalities are required to update their developmnent charge by-Iaws and policies under the Act. 1)evlopment Charges Study Proceis The Region is currently undertaking tihe following developanent charges studies and is considering the fol- Iowing: 1. Region-wide developmpknt charges by-law for residential and non-residential developmnent in thse Region; 2. Milton 401 Industrial Park area specific developmnent charge by-law for non-oesidential developmnent to recover costs related to water and wastewater infrastructure; and 3. Area specific road development charges by-law for residential and non-residential developmrent to be imposed in the urban and HUSP expansion area of Milton and die Halton lls 401 Corridor.
