iGrowth bringing more j flight noise over Milton By IRENE GENTLE The Champion Airpiane noise may be a fact of life in Milton and Halton His, at least for the foreseeable future, Halton regional council heard recently. The reason is-that flight patterns bave changed as a resuit of an immense growth project at Mississauga's Lester B. Pearson Airport. The changes began after operation of the airport was taken over by the Greater Toronto Airport Association (GTAA) two years ago. The GTAA bas taken on a massive restructuring project that will eliminate Terminal One and the west- 1, cm portion of Terminal Two., An international terminal will be constructed -instead. The work is not expected to be complcted until somnewhere between 2005-2008. "Essentially what we're trying to do is build a new Sairport without affecting tie operation of the existing airport," said John Walkcr, a director on the GTAA board. il Planes less noisy Milton Mayor Gord Krantz wondered if noise prob- lems caused by Uic new flight pattems have come in eý for a permanent landing. "I 1917, when they crcated income taxes they said tit was temporary. It's stili with us," he said. -There have heen several complaints from Milton and Halton il Hilis. How can we assure the residents of Halton that it is temporary?" Even if flight pattems don't change, airpianes them- selves are getting quicter, rcsponded Mr. Walker. ¶"Wc're trying to eliminate Uic noisy planes from the o airport," he said. "But while wc'rc adjusting Uic air- port you might sec more traffic in one arca than anoth- Mr. Krantz wondered if north Halton would remain li a heavy traffic ares for Uic duration of airport renova- tions.
